A paracosm is a detailed imaginary world. Paracosms are thought generally to originate in childhood and to have one or numerous creators. The creator of a paracosm has a complex and deeply felt relationship with this subjective universe, which may incorporate real-world or imaginary characters and conventions.

Jonathan looked up in awe of the sky, the many things all flying around, the beautifully detailed creatures that soared through the sky intangible as they passed through the clouds and each other.

He looked down and watched as a small raccoon-like creature ran in circles around his mother as she talked with a man he didn't know. They were pretty far away and he couldn't hear much, but from the big motions they were making with their hands and the way they kept looking back at him, he could only assume they were arguing, about what though, he didn't know.

He watched as another raccoon joined the first one and then another until there was a large group of the odd raccoon-looking creatures dancing in a circle around the adults. "Do you see them too?" a voice asked making him turn to his right and come face to face with another boy his age.

His skin was tan and he had squinted eyes and black hair. He was wearing a sports jersey with the number thirteen on it. He looked back up to the boy's face and noticed he had deep brown eyes and gulped quietly before nodding. "Yeah," he looked back over and cocked his head to the side slightly, in the time that it took for him to inspect the boy beside him and his earth-toned eyes, owls had joined the fray.

They had long human-like limbs, almost same as the other creatures. They dance around the adults, hand in hand chattering and cooing at each other like a foreign language that he didn't understand.

He looked back up to the sky to see an assortment of flying creatures. Some looking like dragons with plane wings and others looked like columns of smoke flying around in the air twisting around, making knots in and of themselves before conjoining with each other. That's when he felt a hand grab his making him jump slightly.

He looked back over at the boy who was smiling. "My names Evan. Wanna be friends?"

Jonathan blinked a few times before he nodded with a small excited gasp and squeezed Evan's hand a bit tighter.

--

"I don't know what's wrong with him Doctor... He's thirteen years old and he has no friends, and he always talks to himself. He says he's talking to Evan. He doesn't know anybody named Evan. Never has." Jonathan sat in the uncomfortable chair as his mother talked exasperatedly with his new doctor.

"I've been to every child therapist in North Carolina, Michigan, and California more than enough times that this should have been fixed by now!" she sighed slumping back into the chair. She looked back over at him and smiled kindly.

She knew he was different. A bit reclusive and anti-social, but this had been going on for years. Evan-this, Evan-that. He never talked about anything, or anyone else.

She put a cool palm to his face rubbing a thumb over his high cheekbones. "Why don't you go out in the hall sweetie, I'll just be a moment."

Jonathan nodded and trudged out of the office. "I don't think she likes me," Evan said sadly, and Jonathan shook his head. "That's not it, Ev. She just doesn't understand me... Us. She thinks we're broken." the words left his mouth and he felt a lump form in his throat. He slumped against the wall and started to cry silently.

He sat there for a few minutes before he felt a soft nudge on his hand and looked up. He smiled at the sight of the red and white owl, they change through the years, with him. They no longer had human-like arms and legs, they just looked like the animal but had much more vivid and unlikely colors. The raccoon crawled in between the space of his neck and the wall giving him some comfort and warmth.
