Laurent hugged his mother then walked with her into the kitchen. He told her what the doctor told him. His mother cheered excitedly then asked if they were going to announce she the news at dinner tonight. Laurent shook his head no, explaining that Lyra didn't know yet and how he found out.Lyra walked into the kitchen and tried not to frown seeing Laurent still bonding with his mother. She had already come to the realization that she needed to get used to this but she couldn't help feeling a little intrusive. Laurent was still hugging his mother and neither seemed remember she was there.
She asked her belle-mère if she wanted her help in the kitchen, received the expected no, then was exiled to sit in the other room out of the way. She opened her snack bag and ate a few raw carrot chunks since she didn't know how much longer she would have to wait to eat. She sat there drinking her bottled water and tried to be patient.
She leaned back and put her hands on her stomach. She could feel the carrots weren't doing anything for her hunger and it didn't look or smell like either her future mother in law or her husband were preparing anything to eat.
“Excuse me,” Lyra said softly as she stood in the doorway, “Laurent can I borrow your car to get something to eat.”
“You don't like my cooking?” Her mother in law asked.
“Of course I like your cooking. I didn't want to interrupt your conversation.” Lyra smiled, “It's okay, I can walk.”Her mother in law scoffed. Lyra grabbed her bag and was walking towards the door when she heard it; her name in the “undertone”. She turned around and walked back to the kitchen.
“Why don't you like me?” Lyra asked interrupting their conversation.
“What?” She glared as she turned towards Lyra.
“Why don't you like me?” Lyra didn’t back down as she repeated.
“I like you.” She sniffed turning away.
“No, you tolerate me. I don’t know what I could have done except love your son that would make you dislike me.” Lyra countered. “I am sorry if I am not the type of daughter you were hoping for but I am not going to let you run me away without a fight. I am marrying your son, I am carrying your grandchild and,” Lyra lifted her head to look into her mother in law’s eyes,“I'm not only going to be his first wife. I am going to be his last. The least you could do is tell me honestly, why you don't like me!” Lyra stood still as her mother in law approached her.Laurent covered his mouth with his hands. Lyra figured the worst that would happen was she would have a difficult relationship with Laurent's mother just like she has with her own mother.
His mother stared for a few minutes then started laughing and hugged Lyra; leaving Lyra slightly confused. When she pulled back, her mother in law caressed Lyra's cheek and smiled.
“Good. You need fire to keep my son. Do not lose it.” She told Lyra.
Lyra realized that time his mother was testing her, trying to measure her determination. Lyra started crying, she lowered her head as Laurent hugged her.
“Aww you love me.” He cooed.
“No I'm mad at you. You still don't listen to me.” Lyra pushed him away then pouted. “I'm hungry.”He laughed and her mother in law told her to sit at the table while she started preparing food. Laurent sat beside her playing with her fingers and cooing at her stomach. Lyra leaned back and watched her future husband rubbing her stomach. She smiled feeling her baby in her stomach move for the first time.
“You feel that?” Laurent asked with wide eyes. Lyra smiled and nodded.
“The baby moved.” Lyra said softly placing her hand on top of his.
