Forty Five

Chad kept looking in their direction as if waiting for Steph   to jump on stage and tackle Jordan any minute. She happened to lock eyes with Jordan several times and registered the shock in them when he quickly looked away. In the break before Jordan walked over  to the keyboards for the slow set , while he and Chad worked  the crowd, Joe looked over at her like he'd won the lottery. Almost like he was expecting something to happen. Steph  held her breath when Jordan  sat down and began to play, she only released it when she realized that he wasn't playing anything that would irreversibly stir emotions inside her even though most of his music had some effect on her one way or the other. Joe seemed to loose his excitement as Jordan played his way through the slow tunes. By the time he had finished and returned to center stage to rock out his new material Joe was visibly pissed. Before the first number began she noticed the questioning look that Chad and Joe exchanged across stage ,wondering  what was up.

When Jordan finished the show with two of his most recent hits to top the charts, Stephi thought the place would explode from the noise. She stood back , looking  around at the packed venue. It was wall to wall people on both levels.

Steph smiled grimly to herself, she guessed she had a small part in this. She was lost in thought when a hand on her shoulder made her jump.

"Come on girlie" Bubba said with a nod to the door where people with backstage passes were streaming through.
"Uh, I don't think so" she said waving him off

"I really need to go"

His grip on her shoulder became stronger as he stared her down

"Come on please" Bubba  said sternly as she watched Joe disappear through the door over her shoulder.

Steph  shrugged as she allowed Bubba  to lead her backstage . She saw all the glances from the waiting fans she received when she  and Joe were admitted to an even larger room than before.
She looked around , spotting   Chad and Jordan standing in the back behind a small table filled with their new press photos. She actually caught herself wanting one but laughed and shook her head when she realized how silly that would be of her.

She looked over to the other corner where Joe and  Bubba stood and noticed that they were actually having a heated argument. Joe was gesturing around angrily , at  one time he  pointed in her direction.

Steph  stood back when one of the bouncers led in the first wave of fans for their pictures and autographs.

Steph couldn't stop the tears from filling her eyes as she watched two young women giggle with anticipation. Her heart almost broke open as she longed for her friends. They had once been those silly women and she found herself wanting to walk over and impart some of the vast information she had come to know about fantasies with pop stars.

She turned as she began  walking  over to the quiet corner. Steph  watched Joe leave and resisted the urge to run after him. Bubba walked over with a smile.
"Enjoy the show?"
"yeah it was great" Steph replied  trying to sound   enthusiastic  as she watched Jordan smile for a picture with a fan.
"they just keep getting bigger and bigger"

"yeah" Steph murmured   absently as she watched Jordan kiss an exceptionally attractive woman on the cheek as he  smiled beautifully for the picture. He engaged her in conversation as the others looked on expectantly. She watched him lean in to hear her comment and then throw his head back in a laugh. The woman put her hand lightly on his arm as she laughed at his response.
What in the fuck?

Steph  thought as fury and  deep hurt coursed through her veins. Jordan  was flirting with another fan when he knew she was in the room.

Steph felt sick and had to resist another urge just to run out. Bubba noticed where she was looking and stepped into her line of vision as she saw the woman start to right something on a piece of paper for him.

Joe walked back in almost stomping and looked over at the table in disgust before joining her at her side.
"I think we need to go" he muttered  angrily
"Joe what's wrong?" Steph asked  curiously as she registered the frustration on his face
"Nothing" 
"Should I say bye then?"
"If you want" Joe shrugged
Steph decided to show that she could be the better person and at least be polite so she walked past the line of anxious fans and around behind the table.
"Well guys, we are going so I figured I would say bye and wish you good luck" she said looking around at them
