"Your potential is what makes you different" she said almost to herself "what makes you special"
Special. Just hearing that word made a lump rise tightly in his throat. How long had it been since he had heard someone call him special and really meant it. For the life of him he couldn't remember and now this woman that he had met by chance had possibly given him enough confidence to tour and make albums for the next ten years. He swallowed hard again trying to keep the emotions from over taking him. He absently reached in his pocket and pulled out the necklace that he had been playing with constantly for the last two days. He stared down at the small silver initial. He could never have imagined that someone he had met so briefly would create such a longing inside of him.
"Enough about me" Jordan's voice cracked slightly and he cleared his throat in an attempt to cover the emotion "let's talk about how talented you are" he said with a smile
"Talented? I am not talented at anything really" she said with a down cast to her voice
"Oh come on now, I am positive that you are talented at something" he said with that flirty smile again.
"I doubt that" she said with a laugh
They fell into a conversation that stretched on for over an hour. He couldn't believe how easy it was just to talk to her about nothing. She was so real to him. She didn't just automatically agree with him on stuff and a couple of times he found himself amazed and shocked when she had called him an idiot about what he had said. He had lost himself so much in her voice and the tread of the conversation he had completely forgotten where he was and what he was supposed to be doing. When Chad came out of the building with a pissed off expression on his face he quickly remembered.
"Jordan, what in the hell have you been doing out here for two fucking hours" he said pointing angrily at his watch
"Stephi, hold on" he said covering the phone with his hand and he saw Chad roll his eyes at the mention of her name "I am sorry man, I just lost track of the time" he said with a shrug
"We only have three hours of studio time left, so can you please come on" Chad barked frustrated
"Ok, ok, calm down" Jordan said rolling his eyes back at Chad
He put the phone back up to his ear "Listen I have to go. I completely forgot I was supposed to be working in the studio" he chuckled as he watch Chad stomp off like a pissed off toddler back into the building.
"You do need to get that sexy ass in there and get to working" she scolded playfully "I know a lot of people that are waiting on that album."
He sighed heavily "don't remind me that is all I hear these days"
"Well then get to work and we will shut up" she laughed again
"Ok, I will, I promise" he paused "I guess I will talk to you later then" he said with a smile he kicked absently at the dirt on the sidewalk.
"Great" she said brightly " until later then"
He felt like he should say more but he knew that Chad was waiting and this was costing him a lot of money "see ya" he finished reluctantly
"Talk to you later" she said enthuastically. He was relieved when he heard her hang up. He wasn't quite sure if he would be able to break the connection.
He walked back into the studio almost bouncing. Chad gave him an odd look when he walked up beside him.
"Can we go back into the studio now" he asked impatiently
"I am coming" Jordan sighed and smiled as he clutched at his cell phone.
Jordan had hoped that all the praise and confidence that Stephi had just interjected into him would inspire him to push on and finish one of the few tracks they had left but it just wasn't happening. The work was slow and annoying as they mixed listened to the play back, remixed and then repeated the whole process. Jordan kicked at the sound board as he ripped off his head phones in frustration.
"Where is your head today" Chad hissed annoyed as he took off his head phones to talk to him
"I don't know, it's just not clicking for me" he said as he absently pushed at the nearest dial
"Could it be distractions" Chad asked sarcastically with a raised eyebrow
Jordan spun around quickly and shot Chad a heated look "I will have you know that she was actually giving me the encouragement to finish this thing the entire time" he said defensively
"Of course she was she's a fan remember" Chad said with a cocky glance
"It's not like that" Jordan said as he looked away "I can't explain it to you but believe me it's not like that at all"
"Jordan at this point I don't care what it's like, you just really need to get your head back into the game" Chad said
"Yeah I know" Jordan said absently "when is the next show" he asked as he looked up
"In two days, on Saturday. Why?" Chad said pushing out of his chair to stretch
"Well I was thinking about asking Stephi to come" Jordan shrugged
"What is with this woman?" Chad asked skeptically looking over at him "I have never seen you like this before"
"I have never really felt this way before" Jordan said with that dopey grin again as he distractedly picked at his shirt
"well if you want to see her again then ask her to come" Chad said as he walked to the door "just hope she doesn't bring hubby along this time" he smirked as he walked out
"Dickhead" Jordan glared as the door closed with a snap. He yanked his cell phone off the producer's board and found her number. He called it not knowing if she would answer again. It rang and rang as he tapped his foot nervously. When her voice mail picked up he almost hung up but decided to leave a message.
"Hey Stephi its Jordan again, sorry to be such a stalker and call you back so soon but I was wondering if you were interested in coming to the show this Saturday, call me back and let me know" he paused not knowing exactly how to finish it "Ok talk to you later". He smacked his head as he closed the phone. Why was he acting like a big dopey idiot? He had always felt so smooth with ladies and now, now he wasn't sure what the hell he was doing. When she got back to the car she let out a frustrated sigh as she saw her cell laying absently in the front seat. She had forgotten to take it with her yet again. She put her grocery bags in the trunk and got into the front seat.
"Damn it" she said out loud as she saw the missed call flashing "No one ever wants to talk to me except when I forget my fucking phone" she hissed angrily as she punched the button to see the number. She had a place a hand to her mouth when it was Jordan's number on the screen. She was even more shocked when she saw that apparently he had left a message.
"Maybe this is a step in the right direction" she thought smiling as she entered her password to her mailbox.
When she listened to the message she really couldn't believe her ears. She hit repeat and replayed the message again. He wanted her to come to the show in Connecticut on Saturday. She sighed and held the phone to her chest as she looked around. Could she go? Should she go? She was so excited she could barely contain herself but part of her knew it was so wrong. She shouldn't be excited about going to see a man that wasn't her husband. She thought of Brian and how their relationship had steadily declined since his receiving the promotion to supervisor. He was rarely home and never seemed to want or have the time to make for her any more. When he did, she always felt like she was having to put her life on hold for him. She could see it in his eyes too. The look he once had for her was gone and she felt that they were just now going through the motions of a life they thought that they were expected to lead. Her attention shifted back to the voicemail Jordan had just left. Here was a man that she had been interested in through most of her life and now for some strange but exciting reason he was actually interested in her too. She knew that she had to see if this was for real or just some easy hook up he thought he had acquired. What did she have to lose? There was no way that Brian would ever find out unless she wanted him to, so she thought she would try to see if this was going anywhere other than just a one night stand of her dreams. She took a deep breath and dialed his number. It rang three times and then to her surprise he picked up.
