I ran Lucas into the lab where Mrs. Marshall was waiting. I set him on the table. Mrs. Marshall began running test after test as I paced the lab. The black poison had already consumed his entire lower body and was on his stomach. He was yelling and thrashing around his upper body.
"Anything?" I asked impatiently. Mrs. Marshall looked on the verge of tears.
"There's not much I can do, it's spreading fast. I can't-" She ran upstairs sobbing leaving me to watch my friend die. I stood over him and watched the decay engulf his entire body.
"Lucas, NO!" The line on the heart rate monitor fell flat. Immediately I felt angry, angry I couldn't save him. My arms shot out in front of me, blasting the lifeless body. That didn't help my anger but soon it turned to sadness. Then, I too ran upstairs crying.
Dead, he was really dead.
It was horrible to think that just ten minutes ago we were joking around and everything was fine.
I comforted Mrs. Marshall while we both cried in the family room. Neither of us wanted to believe Lucas was dead but it was true. We sobbed for almost an hour when we heard a crash downstairs. I gave her a nervous glance and wiped my eyes before going down there. In the lab, Lucas was standing up off the ground. My heart stopped and I ran to him. I pulled him in for a big hug. Mrs. Marshall stood in shock behind us crying.
"How?" I asked with a congested voice from crying.
"You." He smiled. "Your powers healed me." I cried into his shoulder. My angry little blast of light saved him. Mrs. Marshall stepped closer to her son.
"My beautiful boy." She put her hand to his cheek with tears rolling down her cheek. They hugged for what seemed like forever.
I got a text ruining the happy moment from my mom asking where I was. I hugged everyone one last time before running off. As soon as I got home, I wiped my eyes and put on a happy face.
That night I laid in bed imagining what would've happened if he was dead. I had nightmares the entire night about it.
But then I shot up from my bed as I heard my ringtone loudly going off. Why? It was still dark out. It was Lucas so I answered it.
"What?" I asked groggily. Luckily it was winter break and I would be able to make up my missed sleep that day.
"You healed me a little too much."
"What?" I repeated, not understanding.
"Just come over, quick." I groaned and hung up the phone. Without even changing I ran to his house. I was wearing fuzzy penguin pants with a tank top but it was too early to care. I arrived at the lab where Lucas was pacing. But something seemed off, he spun around. Lucas no longer looked skinny and scrawny.
"Holy abs." I said once I understood what he meant. Overnight he had pretty much transformed like Captain America did in the First Avenger. Lucas was at least four inches taller and had abs that could make any girl drool, including me. How could I tell? Right, he was shirtless.
Not only that, he also looked older. His face was more angled and matured, as if he was a year or two older. And yeah, it was kinda hot.
"Yeah, so will this wear off or something?" I thought about it. Although I could hardly think because I couldn't keep my eyes of his torso.
"Well you basically just had growth spurts of five years happen in one night so I doubt it. It's just like growing like normal just way faster." Although, I wasn't complaining. I could get used to this. "So why were you up at 4 AM anyway?"
