It's a little concerning how calm I was, considering a man was holding me and my girlfriend's family hostage. Sure, there was a gun pointed at my chest but I was honestly more annoyed than scared. I could tell Emily was feeling the same way. Her grandparents, however, were terrified. They pleaded for their life but we all cooperated with them.

They duct taped our hands behind our backs and our feet together while we sat in the kitchen table's chairs. However, these guys were obviously not experienced in taking hostages. I wasn't even sure the man holding the gun could even shoot it. The other guy paced the length of the kitchen, mumbling to himself.

"What do you want? Money? We can write you a check right now if you want." Her grandma asked. The man scowled and turned towards Emily.

"I loved your mom. We were dating for two years before your dad came around and took her away. She forgot all about me but you know, she'll never forget me after I kill her family. Although, if she agrees to be with me again I might be able to spare her daughters. And you." He looked at me, Emily, and MJ and then to the grandparents. "You two, however, I can't wait to kill."

"Hey." The man pacing called his partner over. He lowered his gun and left us unattended.

I noticed Emily was rubbing the tape on her hands against a corner of the chair. It seemed to be working. I tried to do the same but it wasn't ripping.

Maddy was trying to get our attention. She was looking down at her hands with raised eyebrows, asking if she could use her powers. We shook our heads, knowing that her grandparents were the last people we would want to know about their powers.

However, soon enough, Emily's hands were free. She had just enough time to quietly rip the backside of the tape around her ankles free before the man with the gun came back.

"I need your phone." Her face scrunched up at his demand. "Now!"

"Well, I'm kind of tied up right now. And it's in my back pocket." She lied. He set his gun down to come get the phone. He bent over her, allowing her to reach her arms up around his neck and kick him where it hurts the most. He groaned in pain and stumbled backwards.

"Yes!" MJ yelled, obviously entertained. "Hit him with something!"

Quickly, she grabbed a frying pan from the counter and hit him over the head with it. I smirked at her as he collapsed. MJ cheered and her grandparents watched in awe.

The other guy came running and took hold of Emily's hair. She dropped the pan, elbowed him in the gut and threw a punch to his face. He wiped blood from his mouth and desperately looked for a gun. He grabbed onto her arm but she pulled him over her shoulder, flipping him onto the floor with a thump. I looked at her in awe. The room was silent. The men were out cold, or at least knew they couldn't get back up without getting beat up again.

Emily called her mom and told her what happened. She said they would be over in a few minutes and to try to restrain them. Emily duct taped their hands and feet together with the tape they brought and left them laying in the middle of her family room. Then, she started freeing the rest of us.

After she cut my hands and feet free, I pulled her face down for a kiss. Her hand fixed the collar of my shirt after she pulled away. I smiled.

"That was pretty damn cool." I said keeping my voice down. She blushed, tucking her hair behind both of her ears. Maddy cleared her voice behind me, interrupting us. Emily untaped her sister and began untaping her grandpa when when her grandma began to speak.

"You actually did something good for once, I'm surprised." Her tone showed the tiniest bit of pride towards her granddaughter. Emily smiled slightly as she began untaping her grandma, finally getting the recognition she deserved. "Your boyfriend, though. He's gotta man up, I mean he let a girl save him. Can't he do anything for himself?" Emily slowly stood up and raised her eyebrows. I just watched, unsure of what to say.

"Excuse me?"

"What? You heard me. He's gotta grow a pair. Obviously doesn't know how to take care of a girl." Emily gritted her teeth, her face starting to turn a deep red. She took a deep breath before speaking calmly.

"You know what? He doesn't need to protect the both of us, we take care of each other. Because we love each other." She said, looking over at me smiling smugly. "Actually you know, I don't need to listen to anything you say. I know what I am. I'm pretty, I'm smart, and I'm exactly the person I want to be. So I'm done listening to you try to make me and everyone I love feel like they're less than than you. Because newsflash, it's a bunch of bullshit." She took another deep breath in before the front door swung open.

Mrs. Shaw ran in and hugged her daughters. Nate followed closely behind, smiling at the hugging girls. Emily's grandma stood up still looking mad and slightly embarrassed.

"Suzanne, we are leaving. Right now. Don't expect to ever see us again." She said before walking to gather their things with her husband trailing behind her. Mrs. Shaw raised an eyebrow at Emily.

"So I might've called her out for all of her crap, but it was worth it and I regret nothing." Nate held his hand up for Emily to high five.

We told a cop everything that happened as the men were taken away. Emily's mom had to go back to work so she and Nate left after a few more hugs. Her grandparents left without another word and soon enough, the apartment was empty. Emily called and ordered a pizza as if nothing had happened.

"Sometimes I think you're so boring and lame, and then you do stuff like today and it honestly blows my mind." MJ said making Emily smile. "I mean, you beat up two grown men without your powers. And then just called grandma out for being a bitch like it was nothing."

"That was amazing." I agreed.

"Yeah it felt really good." Emily was grinning from ear to ear. It's been awhile since I'd seen her this happy.

After we ate the pizza, MJ got another call on her phone leaving Emily and I in kitchen. She was smiling nonstop and overall really happy. I watched her as she poured herself a glass of water. She gave me a funny look, her smile growing.

"What?" She poured me a glass as well.

"I don't remember the last time you looked this happy." I said catching myself still staring at her grin.

"Today's been so good." Her voice was filled with excitement. "I stopped Mrs. Baker from taking down the school, knocked out those two guys, and finally called out my grandma. All without using my powers." She spoke with great confidence in herself like I'd never heard before.

I smiled, leaning in for a kiss. My hand touched her cheek and I felt her smile against my lips. "You are amazing."

I guess I'm ending it like this?? Sure, why not?

Also Happy New Year! I have a feeling 2019 is gonna be a good one :)
