There hadn't been a big crime in the city in weeks. No arsons, no bank robberies, nothing. Just the occasional hit and run or shoplifter. Of course, I was loving it. Finally got to relax for once. I even hung out with my mom for the first time in awhile. She brought home dinner and we played some card games. We were in the middle of go fish when she suddenly went quiet as if she were thinking.

"Did I tell you? Nate and I are working a case together." I looked up quickly, my eyes wide. MJ wasn't as excited because she had only met him once. "Today we were looking into a possible drug supplier and you should've seen how one girl was looking at him." She rolled her eyes. "I don't think she would've given us information if he wasn't flirting with her the whole time." She giggled. My mom does not giggle.

"Sounds like you missed him." I smirked.

"Yeah right. He was just as childish and immature as before. But he does make me laugh a lot more than Pembroke did." Detective Pembroke was her last partner, he was lazy and kinda gross. Oh and old, very old. "MJ, got any tens?" MJ huffed and handed her two tens. Mom cheered and stuck her tongue out at us. I threw my cards down, rolling my eyes.

"Well, I think I might head to bed." I gathered the cards up and put them back in the box. Mom nodded in agreement, kissed both of our foreheads and said goodnight. It was only like 9:45 so I turned on the news.

It was pretty boring so I just scrolled through Instagram, not really listening to the TV. That's when I heard my two least favorite words. Breaking News. I slowly put down my phone, hoping it was nothing. Unfortunately it was something. It was definitely something.

"This just in, one of the city's biggest threats has been spotted all over the city tonight. Nyx, the metahuman who once threatened to bring an eternal darkness to Central City, has attacked five civilians tonight. All have been hospitalized and in critical condition. Stay inside your homes and lock your doors. Report any activity to the local police." I jumped out bed and quickly suited up. Then I realized Lucas might not know about this. I did the first thing that I thought of, go to his house and warn his family.

When I got there, I opened the door and ran upstairs. I banged my hand on the door. Lucas opened the door, steam rushed out around him. I looked down at the towel around his waist. He looked at me confused.

"What-" He started but I interrupted.

"Nyx is back." I said seriously. "You need to stay here. Call me if anything happens." If she really wanted to get him, wouldn't she had already done it? No, she was planning something bigger. I reached up and gave him a quick kiss. His face was hot and still a little wet.

Then I ran. I ran through street after street. I didn't see anything. But I felt something. I felt weaker, she had to be nearby. My running slowed until I had to stop. I caught my breath and look around. The side walk I was on was empty. It was practically pitch black. The only light came from the moon. There was no sign of her. I was about to continue search when all of a sudden she appeared in front of me.

She looked especially smug that night. As if she knew something I didn't. I readied my powers, although I had a feeling she was just here to threaten me or gloat.

"It's been awhile, hasn't it?" She crossed her arms casually as if she were talking with a friend. "Tonight's been a blast. You're a little late to the party though."

"What do you want?" I questioned, getting annoyed by her fake friendliness.

"Just wanted to end the nice break you got." She smiled. Somehow she was behind all of this, I knew it. "I bet you got to relax, hang out with Lucas-" Suddenly light bursted from my hands like sparklers as I stepped closer. She brought her hands up in defense.
