Chapter 18

So I just made this picture thing for Maddy/MJ and its a little confusing because Maddy isn't called MJ yet but just roll with it :)

The man standing at my door was definitely my dad. The one who left us. I stopped breathing and shut the door. I hoped I was hallucinating. I jumped as the doorbell rang again. Slowly I opened the door trying to remember to breathe. Why was he here?

"Look, I don't have much time. They're after me." He looked sweaty and nervous. He stepped aside to reveal a younger girl. "Tell your mother I still love her no matter anything that happened. I love you too, Emily." My hairs on my arms stood up as he said my name. Memories of his voice came back to me. "Just take care of your sister for me." We heard police sirens and he ran off, leaving the girl and I confused. Her eyes were shut as tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Wait, I have a sister?" I muttered to myself. "I have a sister?! Oh my god. That was my dad. And you're my sister?!" The girl kept on crying in front of me. I panicked. Before calling my mom I realized everything she taught me about not freaking out in a time like this. I took a deep breath my voice still shaky. "Let's sit down." We walked over to the couch and took a seat. She brushed her too long bangs out of her eyes and wiped away the tears. She looked at me with her bloodshot dark chocolate eyes.

"So if you're my sister, you've been with our dad for 12 years." She nodded. "What's your name?"

"Madelyn." Her blonde hair was in a ponytail. She wore jeans that were too short for her and a purple jacket that was filled with holes. "My dad-- our dad and I were living in Keystone, Kansas until a couple months ago when we were on the run. Dad, he's a fugitive. He wants to save the world, in his own way by hacking into banks. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Before I was born he was caught but ran off with me before they could catch him. We took on new names and lived in the middle of nowhere. He started hacking again and they found us. We came back to Central City because we knew he'd get caught so he brought me here." My father was a Robin Hood hacker thief who raised my sister after stealing her from my mom. I was speechless. Luckily I didn't have to speak as my mom opened the door. I shot up from my seat.

Mom turned over to us. Confused about who the girl sitting with me was she walked closer.

"Mom. I have a sister?" I blurted the first thing that popped into my head. She set down her groceries and didn't speak.

"Maddy?" She stood up and nodded. They embraced as my mom teared up. "You must be twelve by now! What happened? Where's your father?"

Maddy explained everything and my mom was in shock. I was silent the entire time. Mom told her where everything was and that she should shower. As soon as she left I spun to my mom.

"So my dad is a criminal." My tone might've been a little harsh. Obviously I was slightly mad that my mom told me nothing at all about my dad. She cringed.

"Yes but he just wanted to make a difference in our city." I understood the want to help people in any way possible.

"But all these years he raised her, what if she's insane or something."

"Your father might've had a poor sense of justice but he wasn't evil. And neither is she. Now get your PJs on and I'll start the pasta." She shooed me out of the kitchen.

I laid on my bed pondering everything that I learned that evening. I lost track of time and Maddy walked in with a vintage nightgown with a towel on her head. She sat down on my window seat and looked out the window.

"Central City is really nice but I miss the little farm we lived on in Kansas. And the little school I went to. Plus I'll miss my Dad so much, but he'll be in prison for the billions of dollars he stole." She kept staring out the window at the falling snowflakes. I didn't know what to say so we sat in silence.
