Chapter 3
The gaurds had already given her cell to another prisoner, so Kara had to share with the small girl. Upon entering the cell, she had learned the girls name, Mina. Mina told her about how Jace had destroyed her village, taking some people as prisoners. The rest had died off in prison, and she was the only one left. Kara told her about how she was taken here, and about the ritual. As she told her about the ritual, Mina’s eyes widened with fear. “ That ritual, is to make him immortal” Mina whispered quietly. Kara just looked at her with disbelief. “ They need a certain blood to do it, but I wonder why Erik wouldn’t use someone from here” Mina added. “ The ritual has to be done every month, so they are going to keep you here.” “You mean they have to cut my arm open every month” Kara replied with fear growing in he voice. Mina nodded, then laid down on her mat to go to sleep.
After several hours of planning, Kara knew what she was going to do. Quickly waking Mina, she explained the plan. The small girl agreed, wanting more than anything to escape. Kara quietly took out a bobby pin from her hair, and began to pick the lock. Mina stared at the tiny object Kara had in her hand. She had never seen anything like it before in her life .After about five minutes, the door swung open. They were out. They raced up the corridor and the long stairs, into the main hallways of the castle. It was almost midnight, so the castle was silent. No one was awake. “ Let’s try to find an exit, like a window to climb out of “ Mina whispered quietly. Kara nodded, and the girls turned the corner of the hallway, running straight into Jace and Erik.
The four people stared at each other for a few seconds, registering in their heads what had just happened. Kara’s breath caught in her throat, as she locked eyes with Jace.
Jace stared at the girl from the ritual, right into her green eyes. “ She escaped” he thought to himself. He had to admit, he was a little impressed. She had no weapons, so this would be an easy fight. He looked straight into her eyes, and smiled.
Jace lifted his hand, and Kara had a plan. Just as he sent a burst of fire, she had flung the giant red curtain covering the window on top of him and Erik. Mina raced into a room across the hall with Kara, and shut the door tight. Kara opened the window, and said “ ok climb down the vines, and wait for me in the forest. I’ll think of way to hold him off.” Right as she said that, Jace blew down the door. He walked in the room, his arms raised to send another fire bolt at her. Just as he did, Kara grabbed the bowl of water from the bedstand table next to her, and threw it at him. It put out his fire and completely soaked him. Right then Erik, entered the room. Seeing Jace completely soaked, he snickered. “ Just get her” Jace sneered. They both looked towards the window, and as the lighting illuminated the room, they could see she was gone.
Kara climbed down the vines on the side of the castle, and dropped down onto the wet grass. Mina was waiting in the forest, signaling for Kara to come. Kara sprinted into the forest, turning back to look at the castle. “ Get down” Mina ordered. The two girls crouched down underneath a nest of ferns, as they watched Erik and Jace enter onto the balcony of the room. They quickly surveyed the forest for any sign of movement. Their mouths were moving, and they were talking rapidly, but neither Mina or Kara could tell what they were saying. The two left the balcony after a minute, and the two girls quietly came out of hiding. “ They’re probably going to send someone after us” Kara whispered. “ We need to get going. We have to be as far away from the castle as possible before sunrise” Mina whispered back. They both nodded their heads, and turned around and ran deeper into the black night of the forest.
After several hours of walking, both were completely exhausted. Luckily, Mina was able to find some berries for food, and a stream for water. They both sat down and ate, not talking. They were silent, so the only noise was the rustling of the leaves in the wind. After their quick lunch, they got up and kept on walking. As the girls walked, they were able to find out more about each other. Mina now knew that Kara was an only child, and her dad had died of a disease. Kara found out that Mina’s dad had been a merchant in her village, and she had two younger sisters. Talking more, Kara also learned that Mina was ¼ elf. This was why she was absolutely tiny for her age. The two girls now felt closer, knowing more about each others past. After walking for the whole day, Kara and Mina finally came upon a town. It was big enough to hide in, just incase Jace decided to come after them. When they entered the town however, they could see a big problem.
There, waiting at the town gates, stood about 13 soldiers, along with Erik, and a very agitated Jace. He kept glancing around, and scuffing his shoes in the dirt, rising clouds of dust. Kara quickly pulled Mina behind the closest tree, her heart beating wildly in her chest. Mina, realizing what had happened, let out a small squeal. Kara quickly glanced around the tree again, and realized that no one had seen them.
They waited for about ten minutes behind the tree, before Mina had an idea. She gestured to crawl into the bed of ferns, and they could enter the village from the back gate. Kara nodded, and took one last glance around the tree. Jace was now sitting down, his back against the gate and his eyes closed. The soldiers were all in a circle talking, and Erik was staring into the village. Mina was already in the bushes, and Kara crawled silently to join her. On their hands and knees, they worked their way around the gate, and ran through the forest until they reached another side gate.
“ Of course I saw them” Erik thought. He turned towards Jace, who looked to be sleeping, and said, “ I think I’m going to go check the side gate”. Jace opened his eyes and said “ There’s a side gate?” Erik rolled his eyes without a response, and walked entered the town. It took him about five minutes to run to the side gate, and when he did he saw her. Walking out of a store, know wearing a black tunic, leggings, and boots. Of course she had bought new clothes, with her old ones she stuck out too much. He watched as her bright green eyes surveyed the crowd, looking for any signs of Jace. “Silly girl” he thought to himself. “ It’s me you should be worried about”.
Kara’s new clothes were comfortable, and fit right in with the other people from the town. Mina quickly gave Kara a cloak, like other people were wearing, to cover her golden brown hair. Now, she looked like any other person in the village. Mina added a cloak, and the two girls were now disappearing into the crowd. They weaved in and out of the crowd, and Kara tried to keep up with Mina. After a few minutes, she was completely lost. Mina had disappeared into the crowd of men and woman wearing black cloaks. The small fair haired girl was no were to be seen. Kara quickly turned around, hoping to find the Mina. Instead she came almost nose-to-nose with Jace. Lowering her face so he couldn’t see who she was, she tried to walk around him, mumbling some apology. Instead, he looked above her and searched the crowd. “ You haven’t seen a boy about my height, with blue eyes and curly dark brown hair running around here have you?” Jace said, casually scanning the crowd. “ No, no” Kara said, trying to walk around him again. “ Then again, have you seen a girl around here with really long curly hair? It’s colored like honey. And her eyes are bright green.” “ No, no” Kara replied again, this time, successfully stepping around him and walking on.
Jace raised his eyebrows, and turned around. “ No one has ever talked to me that way” he thought nastily. He started after the girl, ready to give her a piece of his mind.
Kara weaved through the crowd, until she came to an alley. She walked to the back and sat down on a box. She put her face in her hands, and sighed. Jace walked down to the end of the alley silently and stared at the girl. She looked up at him, stunned. He looked into her piercing green eyes, and his heart skipped a beat.
“You” he said, his mouth curling into a sneer. “ Yes me” Kara snapped back, standing straight up. Just then, Erik entered the alley, having followed Kara in. He came to stand behind Jace. Jace reached forward and ripped off Kara’s cloak, throwing it to the ground. Erik reached to grab her arm but she kicked him in the stomach, causing him to double over. This time, Jace came towards her. She punched him squarely in the jaw, and ran towards the exit of the alley. She felt something burning hit her back, and she fell to the ground, biting her tounge. Jace yanked her to her feat and pushed her up against the wall, almost choking her. " You little...." he started to say before Erik came up behind him. Jace looked to Erik, then back ar Kara. He threw her once against the wall, just enough to make her disoriented. Not knowing which way was up or down, Kara couldn't fight back. Jace grabbed one arm, and Erik roughly grabbed the other. Kara was yanked out into the crowd by the two boys, as they began to drag her towards the enterance to the gate.
