"Guys, seriously knock it off" 15 year old Kara said as she sat in her desk of Mr. Chamberlins 3rd hour history class. "Kara...." her friend Brent snorted. "Come on, he's a freak. Have you seen him? He was wearing a vest made of rubber bands yesterday. It'll be funny". " Whatever" Kara giggled, remembering the rubber band vest. Brent had been Kara's friend since 6th grade.  He and his 3 friends were always terrorizing the nerdier boys in their grade. Kara had always laughed along, but felt a pang of sadness every time. "Marcus is such a freak" Brent's friend Andrew added with a laugh.

Just then, Marcus walked back into he room from his bathroom break. His tiny brown eyes surveyed the class room. He pushed his thick framed green glasses back onto his nose, and went to sit down in his chair. As soon as he sat down, he began to look for his stuff. "Alright. Where's my stuff" he said angirly, pushing his brown curly hair out of his eyes. He quickly got out of his chair and walked to the front of the room. The whole class errupted in laughter, some people even falling out of their chairs. Brent had put what looked like rasberry jelly on his seat, so now his butt was covered with it. When Marcus finally figured out what had happened, his eyes filled with tears, and he tried to rub the jelly off. He only succeeded with getting it all over his hands. He stood at the front of the room, butt covered in jelly, not knowing what to do. "I can't let this happen" Kara thought to herself. "You went way to far" Kara said to Brent. " Seriously Kara" Brent said shaking his head. "Your such a goody goody". Kara ignored him and walked up to the front of the classroom. "Cmon Marcus" she said quietly. "Let's go to ther nurse's office. You can get some new pants". "What are you doing?!?!" Brent yelled from the back of the classroom. "I'm helping him!" Kara yelled back. The whole classroom was quiet now. "What you did was cruel. It wasn't even funny. Have you ever thought about how Marcuc would feel?" she said, lowering her voice. With that, she dragged Marcus out into the hallway.

"Thanks..." he said quietly, now more composed then he had been in te classroom. "I'm so sorry Marcus" Kara said. "I should've said something sooner". "It's fine Kara" Marcus said looking at her sadly. "I wish I could tell you something to help you, but I can't. One day I'll repay you. I swear by it." with that being said, he took her hand and kissed it. He then ran down the hallway, in the direction of the nurse's office. Kara stood in her same spot, confused about what had just happened.

"Kara!" Kara's friend Sam yelled as the tall girl with honey colored curls entered the party. "Sam" Kara squealed back, as the two friends hugged. "Great to see you again!" Sam said. "Hows old Highstone Prep? Mr. Chamberlin still treating you good?" "You know it!" Kara said with a laugh and a smirk. "Well come on in! I'll introduce you to everyone" Sam said grabbing Kara's arm and pulling her into a room packed with people. "This is Sarah" she said pointing to a girl with short brown hair "This is Amy" she said pointing to a beautful Asian girl. Sam went on to introduce the whole room to Kara. "Hey everyone!" she yelled, and someone turned the music down. " This is my best friend Kara! She's from my old school!". At that moment, everyone began to say hi to Kara. "So hows your new school Sammy" Kara said after everyone had said hi to Kara. "Oh its amazing!" Sam gushed, tucking a strand of red hair behind her ear. "Everyone there is so nice! And there are like, 30 different art classes to take!". "I still miss you and Sophie so much though! It's so weird not having you guys around 24/7!". Kara laughed and said "Well it sounds amazing! Sophie and I miss you so much too! Now theres no one to do our art projects for us. Sophie had to make a scuplture of a flower, and it turned out looking like a pumpkin" Kara giggled. The two girls talked and talked until the party was almost half over. "Your phones buzzing" Sam giggled, pointing to Karas purse. Kara unzipped her purse and answered "Mom?". "Hey honey" her mom said. "Can you come home a bit early tonight? I have something I need to do, and I don't want you coming home alone". "Yeah, I guess" Kara said, disapointed. "Ok, see you in 10. Love you". Kara hung up the phone and said "Mom wants me home" with a pout. "Aww Mrs. R!" Sam whined hitting the couch. "It's only been like, 3 hours!". "I know" Kara said misreably. "I don't know why she does this". "Well, you don't want her to get mad. Plus it looks like it's gonna rain soon. You better hurry home. Come back tomorrow?" Sam said. "Sure. About 10". "Sounds great!" Sam squealed and opened the door for her friend, as she took off into the night.

Kara began to walk fast. She got the sense that someone was following her. Her long curly golden brown hair cascaded over her shoulders like waves from the sea. Her eyes would look to the sides every few seconds to make sure she wasn’t being followed by a shadow from the dark. She shuddered in the cold, as the picked up her pace, trying to reach her home faster. When she finally reached the front door, she reached for the key in her pocket, her hands trembling from the crisp winter breeze as it lifted her hair off her shoulders. The crunch of snow from behind her caused her to whirl around with the certain feeling she was being watched. “ Hello” she stammered out, her bright green eyes filled with alarm. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and she knew she was not alone. Quickly backing up, the opened the door, and stepped into the warmth and safety of her home. She was safe, but not for long. She got away, this time.

There was something about the night. Everything held it’s breath, like something was about to happen, something that would change the world, even though no one knew it yet. The moon could sense it, and she shone her rays out to light up every crevice of the forest, and shine on the crystal waters of the lake. The trees swayed in the gentle icy breeze, and sighed. They knew what was about to happen, and they knew how life would never be the same.

Kara sat down on the soft leather couch in her living room. “Hey honey” her mom announced as she walked in the room.  She was wearing a gorgeous red dress, and her favorite diamond necklace. “ Your going on a date” Kara said, without even looking up. “ Yes” her mom said sheepishly, blushing a little. “ With Rick?” Kara replied standing up to go sit in the kitchen. “ Umm, no. It’s someone new, his name is Jonathan. We met at an art gallery opening in town.” “ Oh is he Mrs. Andrews cousin? The one she was telling you about? He’s cute, and he seems nice” Kara said encouringly. Ever since her dad had died of cancer, she had been trying to get her mom to go out with more people, to take her mind of the sadness. “Yes, it’s the same one” her mom said, smiling at her. Kara smiled back, her mom looked truly happy to be going out. She hadn’t looked this happy for 5 months. “ Well I hope you have fun. But don’t stay out too late ok?” Her mom gave her a knowing look, then walked over and kissed her on the forehead. “ Don’t worry about me darling, I’ll be home at around 11. All right? And I'm sorry I made you come home early, I just wanted you to get home before I left. Love you" She replied, as she was walking out the door. “Love you too” Kara replied, walking down the hallway to her room.

Her room was the same as it had always been. White walls, white furniture, and a dark purple bedspread. It was crisp and clean, just, as she liked it. As she stepped inside the room, she was met with an icy breeze that chilled her to the core. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up, and she realized that the window was open. Kara quickly walked across the room to shut it, and when she did, she could see on her wall the shadow of someone in her doorway. Her heart skipped a beat, as she slowly turned around.

The figure in her doorway was in an all black robe, with a hood. Kara couldn’t make out the face, or if they had any weapons. Her hands moved backwards to grip the windowsill, so she wouldn’t fall over in fright. She and the figure stared at each other for a few seconds. She could tell the person was staring right into her eyes, and she stared back with not fear, but anger. The figure then started to move towards her, slowly, raising one of its hand. Kara’s breath caught in her throat, and she felt his fingers around her neck. “What the hell is going on” she thought, her eyes watering at the lack of air. A few seconds later, she collapsed, she needed air. All of a sudden, the hand around her neck let go, and she felt herself being lifted up by the figure. She was half conscious, as she realized she was being carried out of the house, and outside into the backyard.

The stranger carried her through the woods, for what seemed like eternity. Every step the black robed person took, Kara’s sense of danger grew. When they came to a stop, Kara opened her eyes, and saw they came to a small clearing in the woods. The stranger set her down, and pulled a piece of what looked like chalk out of his pocket. He walked around her, and drew a circle. Then he came back inside of the circle, and picked her up again. It said a few words in a language the Kara couldn’t make out, and then, the whole world turned upside down in a flash of light. They were traveling through a tunnel, Kara had to squint her eyes to see. When they got to the end of it, she knew she wasn’t in the right place. Disoriented and confused, she fainted.
