A week passed without any fighting of any kind. Jace had been himself, but was acting differently towards Kara. The only problem was the date. Tomorrow was the date of the ritual, and Kara had no idea what to do. "I have to do it" she thought to herself. "Jace would die". She faintly touched the fading scar on her arm where she was cut the month before and shuddered. "Hey there" Jace said walking into her room. "Hey" Kara sighed, walking over to meet him. "You know what tomorrow is.." she said, her voice trailing off. "Yeah..." Jace responded awkwardly. "I want to do it" Kara said firmly. "Kara.." Jace said rolling his eyes. "No. Don't try to convince me otherwise" Kara said stubbornly. "Fine" Jace said putting his arms around her waist and kissing her forhead. "Fine".
Ever since the incident, Kara had not seen Marcus. It was like he had dissappeared overnight somehow. Jace had probably gotten rid of him, to avoid any question. Kara thought about him almost every day, trying to come up with conclusions in her head to why he was here. "He was watching me" she thought to herself. "No, becasue I've gone to school with him since 3rd grade". Nothing made sense, and thinking about it just gave Kara a headache.
When they walked into the conference room, Erik stood up and walked over to meet them. "We kinda have an issue..." he said quietly. "The goblet's gone" he said looking up at Jace. Jace's eyes widened and he stammered "w-w-what?". "It's not in the safe anymore. I just checked". "Can't you just use another one" Kara said quietly, already knowing the answer. "No." Jasper said coming up to them. "Theres only one that can be used. It has a special curse on it from the age of darkness.". "Ohh ok" Kara said pretending to understand. "Well, who do you think took it" Jace said, regaining his composure. "Well there's Conrad...and then...." Jasper said, his voice trailing off. The three boys all glanced at Kara out of the corner of their eyes. "And then...who?" Kara asked crossing her arms. "The person we thought it was the night that Foster came back..." Jace said running his hand through his hair. " Now that I'm thinking about it, Foster was probably a diversion for them to use the maltriction to evelate in and grab the cup." Jace and Jasper went back and forth talking about all the possible ways this person could have gotten the cup. "I have no clue what they're saying...." Kara whispere to Erik. "I'll tell you about it later" Erik whispered back, walking up to Jace. "If you really think that....he took it, then we need to go now. It'll take at least a day to get there and back.". "Lets pack" Jace said, running around to grab papers. "Jasper, run to the weapons room. Grab 3 swords and a crossbow. Kara, your staying here". "Why.." she asked, looking confused. They were now the only two people in the room. "Kara, this person....if he got ahold of you, he would use you to do bad things. I can't put you at risk for that". He kissed her on the cheek and ran out of the room to follow Jasper. "Well ok" Kara said to the empty room.
They left quickly, slipping into the forest fastly. Kara watched from the window as they dissappaered into the shadows. "I can't believe I'm just sitting here doing nothing..." she thought to herself. She got up from her chair and walked down to the library. As she entered the room, the heat from the fire kissed her skin. "Hey" said a voice from a chair. Kara turned around and saw Marc, his arm still bandaged, sitting and reading. "Hey Marc" Kara said, taking a chair next to him. "Jace told me what happened right before he left. He made a wise choice with leaving you here" he said, putting his book down. "I wish he would just tell me who this person is" Kara said irritated. "I think it's better if you don't know..." Marc said his face looking grim. "Well, why?" Kara said, growing angrier by the second. "Kara..." Marc said, leaning forward. "This person goes back in time. 5000 years back in time. This has been going on for thousands of years between this person and Jace's ancestors.". Kara looked at Marc, wanting more. "There has been a terrible fued of power, and of the power of the elements too. Jace controls fire, and the other.....person controls water, magic, and sun. Don't get me wrong Jace is just as powerful as this person but, he doesn't have as much skills with the other elements. He's been practicing the other elements, and getting more skilled too. It's just that....." Marc said. "Just that what...?" Kara asked quietionly. "I shouldn't say. I've said enough already" Marc said sitting up to exit the library. "Jace would kill me if he knew that I said that" he finished, pushing open the door and walking out. Kara was left alone in the room. She picked up the book that Marc had been reading "Guide to Ancient Civilizations..." she murmered as she flipped though the pages. She stopped and looked at a page titled " The Newvalian Family" under it was a picture of a family tree. It ended with two people that Kara had never seen before, two older looking people. "Maybe his grandparents..?" Kara said to herself as she flipped the page. There was nothing else interesting in the book, and Kara set it back on the table and walked out of the room.
The rest of the day was as boring as hell. Kara had gone back to the library and read some more books until dinner, and read more after dinner. She had been reading an escpecially interesting passage on fairies, and didn't realize how late it was until she heard the yells coming from the hallway. She jumped out of her chair and shoved the doors open and glanced around. "GET HIM THERE NOW!" she heard Jace scream, and she bolted towards the sound of his voice. When she got there, she saw what he had meant. "Erik!" she screamed as she saw the body on the stretcher. Jasper ran to her side and grabbed her. "Kara, we need to leave" he said gently. "NO!" Kara screamed, trying to run to him. "What happened?!?!" she sobbed, looking at his bloody body. "He's not dead" Jasper said to her, trying to calm her down. "He was stabbed 3 times". Kara watched as Erik was taken towards the infirmary. "Who did that..." she said between her sobs, crumpling to the floor. Jasper didn't respond. "We got the cup" he said finally. "It was right where we thought it would be". He gently reached down and helped her up. Kara dried her eyes, and regained composure of herself. "He's gonna be ok" she said out loud. "He's going to be fine" Jasper repeated, hugging her. Jace entered the room at the worst time. He cleared his throat and the two immedietly let go of eachother. "He was..." Kara started at the same time Jasper said "I was only...". Jace held up his hand, not wanting to hear anything. "It's fine, I wasn't going to....anyways. Erik is going to be fine. And we got the cup" he waved a large gold cup over his head triumphantly. Kara breathed a sign of relief. "I'm going to update Marc" Jasper said, sensing that Jace wanted to be alone with Kara. As soon as he was gone, Jace walked over to Kara and said "So, were you ok here?". "Jace, what happened." Kara said, her eyes tired. Jace sighed and said "When we got there, it was easy to get the cup. Too easy. We got it, but when we were heading out that was the problem. He made it so we were ambushed, and...Erik got stabbed. And then...I got really mad and........killed the gaurds. But that enabled us to escape, and here we are!" he said smirking. "Jace, can you please tell me who this 'person' is.". "Kara, I really want to, I do. Theres some things about it that I could use your help on. I just don't want to drag you into this mess, and risk your life." he said. "Look at Erik! I dragged him in and he nearly died. I can't let that happen to anyone else. Especially you". Kara was speechless. "I hate it" Jace said, turning around. "I hate it".
