Chapter forty eight

"Well I couldn't sleep, so I came down to tidy up and ended up in here looking through some papers and I found these lyrics!" I passed him the sheet.
"I opened Gary's laptop and the same lyrics popped up with a link to the track." I explained.
"Yeah Gaz said he was working on a Duet." Howard nodded.
"Well I started singing the female parts between his already recorded lyrics and I would like to record my bits on it and maybe give it to him for his birthday next week? Maybe get it put on a proper disc? Is that possible at such short notice?"
"Well...we could give it a shot...you have the voice for it anyway?!" He smiled making me blush.
"Err...you know how to work this mixer thing desk...don't you?" I said pointing at the desk.
"Sure do!" He said smiling.
"You think I could do it? ...I mean honestly??" I asked
"Only one way to find out?!" Howard Nodded towards the booth. "Have you warmed up?"
"Well I've been singing the female parts since I rang you...is that enough.?" I said
"I would say so..." he winked and fiddled with some sliders and buttons.

"Ok! Shall I........." I stammered
"Get on with it woman For Fucks Sake...not got all day?!!" He joked
"Ok! Ok!" I grabbed the lyric sheet and made my way to the booth closing the door behind me.
"Put the earphones on." Howard said through the intercom.
"Ok," I said once I'd done it.
"Ok, I'll play it through on repeat until we get all the parts we need and the best bits. Ok?" He said through my headphones.
I nodded
"You can face the back wall if I'm making you nervous if you want.....ok....when you're ready."
"Ok...ready." I said taking a deep breath and blowing it out and cleared my throat, then put the lyric sheet on the music stand in front of me.
We did 5 run throughs of the song, then stopped to check back the lyrics. I returned to Howie outside the booth.
"Ok! That's a rap!" He said grinning.
"Seriously?!" I shot him a quizzical look.
"Yep...you smashed it!" He shrugged. "Easy as pie!"
"Wanna hear it? He raised his eyebrows.
"Do I ekk!" I laughed and Howie pressed some more buttons.
"Oh My God.....that doesn't sound like me?!" I was gobsmacked!
"Well with the added reverb and Echo...it enhances your voice." He tried to explain but it clearly went over my head.
"Very technical!" I frowned.
"It's fine! it's brilliant! Gaz will love it!!" He bent down and hugged me tight lifting me off the floor.
"Aw cheers How! Can we get it on disc in time?"
"Leave it to me!" He tapped his nose. "Oh...." He added "...Mark rang me and told me about your funny calls..you ok?" He rubbed my shoulder.
"Hmmmm...yeah I spose!" I shrugged
"Don't let the Bastards see they are getting to you...they will soon get bored and fuck off!" He laughed trying lifting the mood.
"I know..I just don't like dragging you all through this..it's not fair..you all have enough on your plate." I frowned.
"Ah....no worries....we don't really read any papers anyway, so couldn't give a monkeys what they say." He smiled again. "Right...leave this with me and I'll sort it to disc" he said waving a copy of the finished song.
"Thanks a lot How!" I said as I reached up for a cuddle, which he obliged.

After Howard had left I decided I should really get some sleep, and the wine had given me a headache. I returned the wine bottle to the fridge and placed my glass in the sink. Turned off the lights and went to the bathroom and as I dried my hands Garys phone vibrated again.

My tummy turned circles...surely it would be ok?!! Wouldn't it??
"Err...Hello?" I said quietly.
"Hello?" Said the male voice on the other end. "Can I speak to Miss Evans please??"
"Urmmm...that's me....who is this?"
"Oh Hello Miss Evans..sorry to be ringing so late in the day, I am Inspector Green from the Police Department..I'm ringing about an update on your claim."
"Oh...Yes!" My nerves relented. "What's happened?"
"Are you free to talk on this number? Or would you prefer to come into the station?" He said
"Umm...yes this number is safe." I said nodding (as if he could see that?!)
"Ok...just some security questions to confirm your identity if that's ok?"
"Yes..that's fine!" I said
I answered their questions and awaited the news.
"It appears the calls were made from a mobile number registered in your area of London. We traced the owner through the network records to a Mr Steven Mills! Does this name ring any bells to you or Mr Barlow at all?
"Ummmmm...not to me, not sure if Gary would know him?" I said honestly.
"Is Mr Barlow there to speak to?" The Inspector said.
"Umm...yes..er ...wait one moment!" I returned to our bedroom and knelt on the bed and shook Gary's arm that was over the duvet.
"Gary.........GARY!" I said tapping his arm.
"Hmmmmm......" He roused
"Gary....it's the Police, they want to speak to you!!"
"What??? Eh????" He sat up and rubbed his eyes taking the phone from me.
"It's about the calls!! They have a name!"
"Ooh ....... Err....Hi!" He said into the phone. "Yes this is Mr Barlow..." He confirmed his full name, DOB and our address. After a few "hmmmmm's" and "ok's" his face dropped and he turned a shade of white. "Yes I do." He said quietly as his eyes welled up.
"Gary?" I said "who is it?" Squeezing his free hand.
"Yes.....he's my Ex Wifes Boyfriend." He said as a lonely tear dropped down his cheek. He gave Julie's address.
He continued "but my children will be there..I don't want them seeing police barge in!" He said worried. After a pause he said "oh ok...yes then she's usually out then" another pause "yes ..err...yes ok!" He grabbed a pen and the pad he keeps beside his bed for late night lyrics that pop into his head and jotted down a reference number and a phone number. He then gave his thanks and hung up..still with a stunned face.
"Julie's Boyfriend?!!!!" I shouted!
"Fucking bastard!!" he said softly. "And he's living in the same house as MY kids!!" His voice raised.
"What did they say?" I said questionly.
