Gary had arranged mine and Anna's singing lessons for the next week. He hired a chap who they used to get lessons from many moons ago in his early days. Thankfully, although he was long since retired, he was willing to help us out. And if Gary's voice was anything to go by, he was extremely good at the job too.
Mum had Taylor so Gary came with us for the first lesson, just to introduce us and show us where he lived.
"Mel...Anna, this is Alfie Jones!..Alfie this is my wife Melissa" I shook his hand "and this is Anna Orange." Anna did the same. "They happened to be friends when we met them back in 2014, they have done some singing before, but would like some lessons. And as I've used you before, I thought you'd be happy to help?"
"Yes I remember seeing them when you did the New Year's Eve gig. You boys are very lucky lads. And how Is the lovely Jason, Anna my dear?"
Alfie had only lost his life long Partner Cyril a few years previous. But was always glad to see Gary from time to time. He had once said he'd always knew the boys would become famous One day and even played a part in them reuniting. He always joked to his circle of friends that he "'taught TakeThat everything he knows' .... seems he was right.
"He's good thanks Mr Jones, he desperately wanted to come today to say Hi! But it seems our little girl has come out in the Chicken Pox"
"Oh dear! Poor child. Be sure to Send Jason my love won't you? Oh and please call me 'Alfie' "
"I'm a little nervous actually" Anna giggled nervously.
"Me too!" I agreed.
"I'll go make us some tea shall I?" Gary said excusing himself so as not to make us too nervous.
"Oh yes please Gary my boy, such a nice lad. He's always looked in on me since I lost Cyril...so thoughtful"
"Aww we're so sorry Alfie" I said sadly.
"I bet they were handfuls in the early days! How did you keep them under control during lessons?" Anna lightened the mood.
Laughing he cast his mind back "yes they were..but they were very keen on learning. After the hour we usually gave up as they started to lose interest...Gary always made the tea though..even back then."
Anna and I exchanged looks.
"Right shall we get started on some warm ups" Alfie pushed himself out the chair with all his might.
I stepped forward to help but was turned down bluntly.
"No!" He held up a hand "I'm fine dear! I can do it!" I got the impression he was strict but fair with his musical clients.
We started with some warm ups and he tested our vocal range. He may have been in his latter years, but he certainly knew his stuff.
Gary rejoined us and sat at the piano that was parked in the corner of the living room. He played the chords as we warmed up.
A few hours into our first lesson it was apparent Alfie was tiring. Gary must have seen it too, as he said.
"Well I think that's enough for one day, great lesson Alfie. Well done girls!"
"Yes! A wonderful first lesson. You both have good vocal ranges. Keep practising and you will do well" Alfie smiled politely.
"Thank you Mr J.....sorry Alfie" I smiled
"Same time.... When?" Anna finished her glass of water.
"Oh...the voice will now need rest for a few days..only the warm vocal exercises I showed you earlier please...shall we say same time next Tuesday?"
"It's a date!" I said scribbling it in my diary.
"Thank you so much Alfie! We really do appreciate all your help" Anna smiled as Gary gathered up all the cups and glasses we had had tea and water in and took them to the kitchen to wash them up.
"Oh thank you my dear boy...he's so thoughtful" Alfie said to us.
"It nothing!" Gary called from the kitchen area. "Just don't tell my wife...she'll get me doing the washing up at home!"
"Too right I will!" I joked.
When Gary rejoined us, we said our thank you's and goodbyes. Gary made sure he was going to be ok for the rest of the day.
In the car on the way home we talked about our day.
"Wow! That mans a legend!" Anna said
"He certainly knows his stuff!" I agreed. "He thinks highly of you Babe! And the other boys."
"Yes he does! He gave us vocal coaching many years ago. I just look in on him every so often now! But he was brilliant to us back in the day! You girls sounded great today! I'm really excited about The gig now. Should be a great night."
"I was so nervous!" I said relieved.
"Me too! But he puts you mind at ease doesn't he?" Anna nodded.
"I never knew my voice sounded like that?" I thought I'd done quite well considering I had no previous training.
"He does work magic!" Gary grinned.
"Oi! I'll take that as a compliment Barlow!" Anna said playfully.
"Hope Maddi feels better soon!" I shouted as Gary and I left Jay and Anna's apartment. They waved back from the pavement.
Driving back to my mums house to pick up Taylor Gary said.
"You sounded great today Baby!"
"Aw thank you!" I rested my head back feeling the tiredness fall over me.
"I can't wait to have you on stage! You ok? You look tired?" He said looking between me and the road ahead.
"Yeah! I know what you mean now, when you said singing takes it out of you!"
"Not up for an afternoon nap then?" He winked cheekily.
"Any other time I would jump at the chance Babe. But seriously if I go to bed now...I will be sleeping...believe me!"
