Tigris wandered through the woods late at night thinking over the last few days. One event in particular ran through her mind, Fionola's funeral.
It had been a large event that the entire student body had participated in. And many awards had been assigned to Fionola and her teammates. She was actually a little jealous. If she were to die today she doubted more than a dozen or so people would show. And most of those out of obligation rather than truly missing her.
But what was the most shocking was the speeches given that day.
^^^flashback^^^
Tigris stood at the back of the courtyard as she watched all the students go through the viewing for Fionola. Her parents stood on one side of the casket receiving well wishes and condolences, her mother looking exhausted and tear stained. Beautiful bouquets sat on stands behind and on the side of the casket, gifts and tributes from both students and teachers that had known her. Once the viewing came to a close everyone took a seat as Headmaster Ozpin stood behind a podium that had been placed for the occasion. He looked out at the crowd gathered there and began to speak in a somber voice.
"The world has lost a source of light and hope," he began. "Fionola Eimear was a proud student of Beacon Academy who had come from humble beginnings. Her parents were simple farmers who only wanted happiness for their only child. And so when she declared she wanted to be a huntress they supported her decision.
Back then I had no idea that I would be receiving a new student who would not only excel at every task given to her; but would also teach me a few things as well. She also caused me more trouble than any student before her." He chuckled sadly. Many in the crowd laughed and cried at the memories they had of her. "Fionola was always a bright light that shown down on everyone's day making things feel much better and she will be dearly missed. There is so much that I could say about this young woman who changed all our lives. But I believe that her teammates would be better at saying those things."
Tigris couldn't help but feel depressed as she watched Fionola's team walk to the podium; their captain stood before the microphone while the two boys stood on each side of her.
Iris should be here for this. Instead of being supportive towards Fionola's team, Iris had pretty much shunned them. She refused to interact with them and even refused to acknowledge their presence when in the same room. Tigris didn't know if she blamed them or if the girl simply didn't want the memories that they would bring. And when Fionola's parents had requested to meet with her she turned them down.
"Guinevere Hall. Isaac Newt. Fionola Eimear. Trent Waters," Guinevere spoke the names of each team member. "These four made up the team that became team GIFT." She looked across the crowd. "But that wasn't what we were originally going to be known as. Back then I had no confidence in myself and was afraid of nearly everything, even my shadow." Everyone chuckled quietly at her self jab. "During our entrance test Fionola had taken charge and caused it to be a huge success. And so when the teams were being assigned she was the one who was chosen to be our team captain. She refused saying that she only had been giving the instructions that I had given. She then took charge of the ceremony from Headmaster Ozpin and assigned our team name to be GIFT. And when the fact that the team names generally had a color theme to them her response was as surprising as it was logical. A gift makes you think of holidays such as Christmas or your birthday. Christmas makes you think of red and green. And your birthday makes you think of cakes. And when you think of cakes you always think of a color, hers was chocolate. Not only that but our team should always try to be a gift to the world."
