Spicy Foods
"Dinah, be careful with that. It's really spicy." Lauren warned as her girlfriend reached for the bowl of salsa in the middle of the table.
Dinah paused. "You're eating it. How hot could it be?"
"Yeah, because I'm used to it, babe. You, however, probably won't be able to handle it. It's kind of a family thing."
"Yeah, I make it myself." Clara beamed proudly.
"It's not for regular people." Taylor also warned.
"I think I'll be okay." Dinah smiled innocently, pouring the salsa on her chicken, pollo, the Jaureguis liked to call it.
"Babe," Lauren sent Dinah a concerned look.
"Lo, I can handle my own."
Dinah stood over the sink in the Jauregui's kitchen with a jug of milk in her right hand and a sweet roll in the other. Tears made their way down her face, pooling at her chin and dripping onto her shirt.
"Babe, deep breaths." Lauren called, rubbing her girlfriend's back.
"I feel like I'm breathing fire." Dinah cried, chugging more milk as soon as she was done speaking. "What the hell was in that salsa?!"
"I warned you not to eat it." Lauren stressed. "Twice."
"Yeah, well you know how dumb I can be!" Dinah whined, shoveling the roll into her mouth.
Clara poked her head into the kitchen with a motherly look of concern. "Is she alright?" she asked her daughter who was still rubbing Dinah's back.
"Yeah, she should be fine."
"Fine?" Dinah gasped. "I can't feel my tongue!"
"That means the milk is working!" Clara rejoiced.
Dinah squinted her face in pain as she bit off another piece of her roll. Lauren giggled at the face her girlfriend made and hopped onto the counter, watching her girlfriend intently. Really, she was just making sure Dinah didn't choke to death on the amount of the roll she had managed to fit into her mouth.
Clara shook her head in amusement before exiting the kitchen, leaving the two girls alone. Lauren pressed a kiss to Dinah's forehead and waited patiently for her to stop groaning.
"On the bright side, I think my family likes you even more, now." Lauren put two thumbs up, earning a glare from Dinah.
Back with the Jaureguis, Chris was still laughing at the situation, earning a disapproving look from his parents. "What?" He managed to get out through laughter.
"It's not nice to laugh, Christopher. She's in pain." Mike scolded.
"Yeah, but it's funny! She wants to make this last with Lauren, but she can't handle mom's salsa? That's only medium?" More laughter filled the air.
"Chris, that's not nice." Taylor defended. "I like Dinah. She treats Lauren well."
"Yeah, she treats her well, now, but what happens if they don't work out? Lauren loves her."
Mike shrugged. "You just have to trust Lauren's decisions."
Dinah, followed by Lauren, walked out of the kitchen a second later looking exhausted. Dinah's face had a temporary red tint to it, letting the family know just how much she had gone through.
"Feeling better?"
"Well, I still can't feel my tongue and I think I drank a whole gallon of milk." Dinah admitted to what she liked to call her second family.
