Chapter 21- Right Now?

"What is this place?" Anna asks.
"I have no clue. I've never seen this place before." Chase says.
"Me neither, and I've been living here my whole life." I say.

I drive deeper into the dark place, and I soon hear chants.
I drive closer, and see a bunch of street lights.
"Park over there." Ryan says while pointing to a spot behind the huge crowd of people.
I park, and wait for something to happen.
"I can't see anything." Anna says.
"Me neither." I say.
"Maybe we should get out of the car?" Chase asks.
"But my hair looks terrible!" Ryan yells.
"Ryan, you look great. Let's go." Anna says as she gets out of the car.
Ryan huffs, and we all get out of the car.
We walk around the crowd, and see a spot upfront.
We all walk over there, and I still don't understand what's happening here.

"Look it's Ashely." Anna says while looking at the front of the crowd.
I follow her gaze, and see Ashley.
Ashley is standing next to a car door, and someone gets out.
It's Jace.

I look at my friends, and they all shrug.
A loud boom sound goes off, and we all snap our attention to a man holding a microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen, last chance to place your bets for tonight's race!"
Everyone starts cheering.
"Let's bring out tonight's racers!" The man yells.
"Over here is, Cole Andrews!"
The crowd starts cheering, but there is some boos.
"And over here is, Jace Johnson!"
The crowd goes crazy, they all love him.
The girls are cheering for him, and the guys are wishing they could be him.
Jace smiles and waves, and Ashely smiles at Jace.

Jace and Cole get in the cars, and go to the starting line.
"Ready. Set. Go!" The man yells.
Jace's car is already gone, and Cole is trying to catch up.
I'm watching the race, when Anna grabs my attention.
"Let's get out of here!" She yells over the crowds cheers.
I take one look back, and see Ashley standing by and waiting for Jace. I glare my eyes at her, and walk away to the car.

"Oh shit! Jace is an illegal racer!" Anna yells.
"That's hot." Ryan says while smiling.

I get called into work again, and I'm there early.
I sit at my desk, and wait for Jace to arrive.
I decide not to tell him that I know he races.
Like really how would I say it, 'oh by the way, I know you're an illegal racer.'

I'm caught up in my thoughts, and didn't even notice Jace came in until he taps my shoulder.
"Huh what?" I ask.
He sighs, "I said good morning."
"Oh, good morning."
He goes to his desk, and starts working.
I, on the other hand, can't focus on anything other than Jace racing.
"Aspen."
"Aspen?"
"Aspen!"
"What?" I ask as I snap out of my thoughts.
"Are you okay?" He asks.
"Yeah, why?"
"You just keep staring at me." He says.
I smile, "Oh um, would you like some coffee?" I ask changing the topic.
He nods, and I quickly walk out of the room.

I walk towards the coffee, and start making him a cup.
"Hello." I hear a familiar voice say.
I turn around and see Ashley standing there.
"Hi." I say.
"Why are you here?" She asks.
"I work here." I say.
"Oh. I'm here meeting up with my friend." She says while smiling.
"I didn't ask." I say with my back turned to her.
She sighs, and walks towards me.
"So, are you going to Jace's party this weekend?" She ask me while smiling.
"Party?" I ask.
"Yeah, it's a pool party."
I stay silent for a while, and she starts talking again.
"Ohh, were you not invited? This is awkward."
I walk away, and head back to the office.

I can't help but feel hurt that Jace didn't invite his own 'girlfriend' to his pool party.

I walk in and put his coffee on his desk, and get back to my paperwork.

I watch the clock the whole day, and it's finally time to leave.
I start packing up my stuff, and head towards the door, but a pair of arms pull me back.
I turn and see Jace smiling.
"Do you need something?" I ask.
"We're going to dinner." He says.
"Okay, well you can pick me up at 8pm." I say.
He keeps looking at me.
"What?" I ask.
"I mean right now." He says.
"Right now?" I ask.
"Yup." He says while gesturing me out the door.
