Part forty-five: Jealousy

Gotham Academy

Kara and Damian walked towards their lockers, grabbing their books for the next period. Kara had her guitar leaning against the locker to her right since Damian had his locker by her left.

"So, homecoming's in two days," she said. "What time should we meet up?"

"I'll pick you up at your house, Gordon." Damian replied.

"You'll just waste fue--"

"I don't care. Chivalry is still alive, Gordon." He replied.

Wait, what? Chivalry? You have got to be kidding me, Damian.

"Uh-huh, sure." She rolled her eyes.

Damian closed his locker, shouldering his bag. He picked up her guitar case and shouldered it, as well. Kara closed her locker and shouldered her bag, holding her math textbook and graphing notebook. They started walking to their next class, a comfortable silence surrounding them.

A few of Kara's new admirers waved at her with loving yet lustful eyes. It made Damian mad. They can't treat a girl like Kara like they're just toys.

"Can you stop entertaining them?" He asked.

Kara lifted an eyebrow, glancing at the young Wayne in confusion. She stared at him, trying to read his thoughts. But the both of them knew that neither of them will let their thoughts display on their faces.

"Why?" She asked.

"They're not worth your time, Gordon." He said.

Kara laughed, bringing her hand up to Damian's hair. She softly patted his head, ruffling it a bit right after.

"It's rude if you don't acknowledge their efforts, Wayne. And besides, if they ever do something to me, I'll do something much painful to them." She said.

Damian sighed, knowing that she was right. She can take care of herself just fine. She can handle fighting Deadshot and Deathstroke combined, a few high school boys. Okay, not just a few. A whole lot of them.

I don't know what's happening in his head. He's acting weird today, more protective.

After school, Damian insisted on driving Kara to her house and she had no choice but get in the car and let Alfred drive her home. Damian sat beside her, looking out the window.

Kara was concerned for his well-being. He was acting so strangely today and she wants to know why.

"Hey, Wayne? Are you alright?" She asked.

"I'm perfectly fine, Gordon." He replied.

"You're not fine, Damian. Tell me what's wrong."

Damian was silent, furrowing his eyebrows at the window.

Okay, what the heck, man? Why is he ignoring me!?

"Wayne, can you hear me? Do we need to get your ears checked?" Kara asked.

"No," Damian replied.

"Then tell me whyyyyyyy!" She whined.

Damian tilted his head from the window and saw Kara slouching on her seat. She had her shoulders slumped and a long exasperated sigh came out of her lips.

"Is this about the boys back at school?" She asked.

Damian stayed silent, looking down at his lap. He rested his elbow by the limo's door and nodded a bit.

"I'm gonna be fine, Damian. I'm not Batgirl for nothing, you know." She said.

"Bu--"

"Stop it with the buts, Damian. My father is the commissioner, my sister is Oracle, my mentor is Batman, and my best friend is the Robin. I have so many people to protect me. You'll be there if I ever need help."

Damian stared at her, wondering how she can be so chill when her life's full of danger and obstacles. She proved to him that she's not just a pretty face, not just a damsel in distress. She's not like any of the flirtatious girls he met in galas and the school. She was something else. Kara Gordon stood out from the rest of them.

A small smile tugged at his lips, his eyes staring into her blue ones. Anyone would easily get lost into those beautiful, shining eyes of hers. It was mesmerizing, extraordinary.

"Yeah," he said. "I'll be there."
