Damian and Kara were one of those happy couples with nothing to worry about. There was nothing that could tear them apart.

As Damian held Kara's hand, they walked by the shore of the beach. The sun was slowly setting and the light in Kara's eyes were fading away. Damian held unto her tightly, afraid that she might slip away from his grasp. He wanted to live with the black-haired girl he fell in love with for as long as he lives. And one day, he will ask her the most important question in a person's life.

Thin threads fell down to the dirty white sand of the beach. Her pale hands held Damian's olive ones as they walked. Neither of them spoke up, afraid that they might ruin this very special moment for the both of them.

They said love is just an illusion.

But Kara wanted to tell him before this day ends. She stopped walking, tugging on Damian's arm. He turned around and his emerald green eyes met hers.

"What's wrong?" He asked in concern, wrapping his arms around her waist. Kara cupped his face with both hands and pressed a soft kiss to his forehead.

"I love you, Dames." She said with a big smile.

Damian smiled a pained smile and hugged her tightly.

"I love you, too, Kara, so much." He whispered.
________

Today's the day, the day when Damian finally pops the big question to the love of his life. He walked out of the manor wearing a black tuxedo, red roses on his left hand. He shoved the small black box on his pocket and took a deep breath before hopping inside his jet black car.

He drove to the designated venue where they'd rendezvous. He passed by dead trees, dead leaves flowing everywhere. A black cat crossed the road, running towards a busted mirror, the shards scattered around the sidewalk.

Once there, he got out of the car and started walking by the grey path. The sun was blocked by clouds that day and Damian hoped it wasn't too late for him to come here. He can see names everywhere. Justine Foster, Charlie Gardner, Ellie McLean, Vivien Washington. And below those names were special dates.

Finally, he reached Kars. He knelt down in front of her and gave her the withering flowers he was holding.

"Hi, Kara," he said. "I just want you to know that you are the best thing that ever happened in my life. You were my light, my chance of surviving." He said the words with such love and care. Tears were starting to form in his eyes as he said the words he had been dying to say to her.

"I loved you the moment we started fighting. It was one of the best days of my life and I want to make this special as well." He said, pulling out the black box from his pocket. He knelt down on one knee and opened the ring box. A beautiful diamond ring sat on the red velvet cushion.

They said that even happy couples have bad endings.

"So, I want to ask," he said. "Will you marry me?" Tears were now rolling down his cheeks as he searched for Kara's brilliant eyes. He looked for the light in her eyes, but they were dull. He longed for her soft touch, but she didn't even move an inch. He wanted to hear her angelic voice, but all he heard was the thunder booming every now and then.

Kara didn't react, she was inarticulate and just laid under the ground.

In loving memory of Kara Mellani Gordon
