Part forty: Second Chances

Gotham Academy

Kara and Riley were the only ones on their table today. Louise was sick and Christine had to visit her grandma at the hospital.

"So, I heard about the news about a new apprentice," Kara said. "Of Deathstroke."

After Kara mentioned the name, Riley froze from head to toe. Her fork didn't reach the salad she was eating and her eyes were staring at her tray.

"O-oh, he must've needed the help." She said.

|Don't make this any harder than it already was, Riley. I'm begging you.|

"Is there something you're not telling me, Riles?" She asked. Riley gulped, looking up from her tray. She knew right from the start that Kara is the girl when it comes to solving things. And she was willing to bet everything she owned that she knows who Gotham's heroes are. In or out their masks.

"N-no! Nothing!" She exclaimed.

Kara lifted an eyebrow, setting her utensils down. She folded her arms and laid them on the table, staring at Riley with an unreadable expression. She shifted uncomfortably, not meeting her eyes.

"Riley....."

Back at the basketball team's table, Damian watched as Kara interrogates her blonde friend. He knew that she doesn't want to do it herself, but she had no other choice. She was the closest one to her.

"I'm so proud of you, Damian." Eric said, wiping invisible tears from his face. The others nodded, smiling at Damian.

"Oh, thanks," he said.

"Dude, you finally got to ask her to the dance! What's the next step?" Jacob asked.

"Uhhh, be close friends with her until she gets to like me." Damian said, not really paying much attention to them.

"Nice,"

Kara lifted her eyebrow higher, knowing that Riley won't be holding it in for long. Even if she doesn't admit it, she knew about her alter ego.

"Okay," Riley sighed. "My alter ego is Black Blade. Deathstroke's apprentice."

Kara's face softened, looking at her friend with sad eyes. Riley didn't dare looming at Kara. She was the commissioner's daughter. They can easily send her to jail now. She's probably recording this right now.

"Why did you do that?" She asked.

Riley sighed, figuring that there's no getting away from her. She stood up, grabbing her bag.

"Let's talk somewhere else." She said.

Kara nodded and grabbed her own bag. She turned her head, meeting Damian's eyes in a moment. They had an unvoiced conversation about Riley and agreed that Damian will listen, too. She stood up, following Riley out of the cafeteria.

"We're going at the back of the school." Kara whispered, pressing her ear piece. Damian turned to look at his friends who were laughing and stood up with his bag on his shoulders.
