Part forty-three: The New Batgirl

Gotham City Police Department

Kara and Barbara walked inside the GCPD, holding paper bags that contained their father's lunch. When they finally saw their father, he immediately engulfed them in a hug.

"I missed you girls," he sighed. "Sorry if I wasn't home very much lately."

"It's okay, dad. What's going on?" Kara asked, handing him his lunch. He put it on his desk and led the two of them to the pistol range.

"I want to test Barbara's strength now that she's walking again. And guess what? There's a new Batgirl." He said.

Barbara and Kara looked at each other nervously, wondering if their father knew about their alter egos.

"Uhm, dad, you know I quit Batgirl a long time ago. Maybe you're just hallucinating." Barbara said. Kara nodded in agreement, too tired to speak.

I may or may not have sneaked out after Damian dropped me off. And the eyebags were covered with make-up. Nice, am I right?

"She has black hair and blue eyes. I've seen her when she patrols with Robin." He said.

Kara grabbed a pistol and aimed at the dummies arranged a few feet away from them. Jim tapped her shoulder, getting her attention. He lifted safety goggles and ear protectors with one eyebrow cocked.

"Oh, right," she muttered.

She grabbed the equipment from her father and put them on.

Sorry, I was used to shooting without protectors. Especially when you train with Jason Peter Todd.

"Well, at least I can surely say that you're not her." He sighed.

Kara smiled nervously, looking at Barbara for help. Her sister got the message and put her equipment on as well.

"Uhh, so why did you bring her here, too?" She asked.

"I want her to know how to defend herself," Jim said. "Now that there's a new Batgirl in town. Let's hope she's not like your sister here."

Kara sighed, looking back at the targets. She took the safety off and aimed at the dummy's head.

"Kara, dear. How did you know about that?" Jim asked. Kara shot the target and the bullet went straight to its head. She shot a couple more until she's empty and went to reload the gun.

"H-how did she....." Jim trailes off.

"I watched you do that since I was a kid, dad." She said.

"But all of your bullets hit the same exact spot!"

Kara looked at the target and saw just one hole in the target. She put the gun down to the table and turned to look at Barbara who was loading her gun.

"Uhh, lucky shot?"

Okay, that was a little hard to fake. Dude, I trained with the Jason Todd and he's an expert in guns. He can match Deadshot, for Pete's sake!

The rest of the day was pizza and ice cream for both Barbara and Kara. They were walking around the mall, Kara helping her sister buy clothes for her.

"Why don't you buy clothes?" Barbara asked.

Kara scratched the back of her neck, looking away from her sister who was searching through the racks of clothes in the shop. She remembered the time when she and Damian went to the mall. Damian bought almost everything she looked at for her and that included so many pairs of shoes and dresses and shirts and jeans. He even bought a new watch for her!

"Uhhh, I still have a lot of clothes." She said.

"Mhm, the ones from Damian?" Her sister smirked. Kara's eyes widened.

"How did you--"

"Oh, come on. I'm your sister. I have to make sure you don't go anywhere alone in an unfamiliar mall."

"Bu--"

"Damian told me that you're safe when I texted him."

"You texted him!?"

Barbara giggled, lifting a blue long-sleeved shirt.

"Of course," she smiled. "Wouldn't want you two getting into trouble now, do we?"

"You and Dick have disguting minds." Kara groaned.

She suddenly heard a familiar voice that made her eyes widen. Turning her head, she saw the Wayne brothers walking past the shop they were in. She ducked, hiding herself behind the racks of clothes. Barbara turned to her sister and looked at her weirdly.

"Help me," Kara whispered. "I was supposed to sleep earlier, but you know me."

Barbara giggled, turning to look at the boys who were just walking inside the ice cream parlor. Kara peeked through the shirts and sighed in relief when the boy wearing a black hoodie finally walked inside the parlor. She stood up, grabbing the shopping bags for Barbara.

"Let's get going, " she said. "You said you want to keep me out of trouble, right?"
