GRACE GRAYSON

I woke up to the loud beep of my alarm clock. Today was going to be my first day working for Captain Essen. I was so excited, but at the same time, I was so nervous. My head was full of thoughts. I got up from my bed and put on my slippers. My apartment was rather clean, but I'd always gotten too distracted to continue to clean it. I got dressed in my pencil skirt and a turtleneck sweater, along with my black heels. My boyfriend James was in the kitchen, and he was already cooking breakfast.

"James, you are already making food? It's 6:00, you need to sleep some more."

"My job doesn't start for another three hours, I think I have plenty of time to sleep. I'm trying to make your first day start off good, you are working for the Captain of the GCPD and you should have a positive attitude for your first impression."

"Oh and Grace, I got a letter from Captain Essen, she said that if you ever felt too stressed you could always take a break." He picked up a letter from the counter and held it out to me.

I took the letter from James and read it on my own, and it basically said what he described. I was too nervous to read it fully, and I just skimmed over it. Unfortunately, I was so caught up in the letter that I didn't even notice that James was wincing in pain.

"James! You have to be more careful!" He had cut himself with the knife on accident. I quickly went to the bathroom to get a bandage. Once I got one from the medicine cabinet, I ran back over and wrapped his finger.

"Thanks, I guess I do have to be more careful. Did you want any of the food I'm making?"

"Not now, considering some of your blood is probably in it." A small grin grew on his face. I look over at the clock, and I noticed I had to get to work. I said goodbye to him and he kissed me on my cheek, and I got my coat on and got in my car.

While I was driving, my mind was racing. I couldn't help to think what my boss would be like, and how my co-workers would act. I pulled up to the GCPD, and it looks like I was just in time. About twenty cops were walking in. I saw a woman in a skirt similar to mine, and she had auburn hair and a yellow top. When I walked in, I was immediately struck with many sounds. There were phones ringing, keyboards typing. I looked over to see some officers conversing with each other, and I heard doors closing. Chatter was the only thing in my mind. I quickly shuffled over to the Captain's office.

"Good Morning Captain Essen!" She smiled and stood up to greet me.

"Hello Miss Grayson, welcome to the GCPD, if you need anything please ask me. I'm assuming you got my letter?"

"Yes, I did. I appreciate you reaching out to me like that, in all of my other jobs, never had a boss done that before."

Just as a small grin appeared on her face, a tall man with dark brown hair and glasses walked in, and he had a very wide smile on his face.

"Hello, Captain Essen.  I'm tall when I'm young and I'm short when I'm old. What am I?"

I smirked at him, and I knew he was telling a riddle. I thought he was very peculiar.

"Ed, what do you need? I don't have time for riddles and jokes."

His wide smile slowly subsided, and then he glanced over at me.

"Oh, hello. Who may you be? I have never seen you around before."

"I'm Grace Grayson, I'm working for Captain Essen as her assistant."

"Hello Miss Grayson, I am pleased to meet you, I am Edward Nygma. I work here in the forensics department and I look forward to working with you."

"Thank you, Mr. Nygma! I know the answer to your riddle." His smile came back to his face, but this time it was even wider. "It's a candle! I love riddles, I find them very fascinating."

"Finally someone who appreciates the inner workings of the brain! We do puzzles to stimulate our brain. Did you know that the history of puzzles is currently known to date back to the 1760s?"

"I didn't know that. That is extremely interesting! I-" Captain Essen cleared her throat and Mr. Nygma gave a quick smile to me and walked back to the M.E. Lab.

Great. Just great.
