It was just eventually the two Mullens jogging in the woods. As soon as their eyes found us, they stopped their run.
Jake sighed with relief. "It's just you. I thought you were the bad guys."
"Don't you recognize our scent?" His sister asked seriously. "But by the way, what're you doing here?" She smiled.
"Is that a dead pokari behind you?" Vincent noticed, pointing at it. Jake and Clarissa unblocked the view by moving.
"Isn't it obvious?" Abel joked and chuckled.
"Well, we're right on time," Eilif smirked as he rubbed his hands together, licking his lips.
Eilif disappeared then suddenly appeared behind me, consuming the animal so wildly as he he hadn't eaten for days.
"Whoa, keep it slow, we'll share the meal," Angeni chuckled. He either ignored what his sister told him or he pretended he did not.
His mouth was half-covered with blood."Angeni," Abel called. "Join us."
I stood because my ankles felt like it was numb. But by the way, my limp leg was getting better. "Come over here, Selene." It was Angeni who noticed me.
Short for words, I showed them the back of my bloody hand. I looked around to search for leaves that could possibly wipe the blood off my skin. I didn't know the right one so I still picked a hand-sized leaf and wiped the almost-dried blood off. It was somehow effective.
The elk who naturally had a fat stomach and complete flesh now faded like wind and soon became bones. The three siblings were so quick in consuming it, like hungry lions that hadn't been eating for a decade.
They were not contented and were not even full yet. "Let's hunt some more," Abel finally stated the obvious.
"Why not?" Angeni agreed.
So they walked away with me following. I felt like their bodyguard.
While on the hunt, I couldn't stop from thinking about the fact that I liked the taste! And not just I liked it, I loved it. The taste was even greater than pizza. Wait, what? Did I just say that I preferred eating raw elks than pizzas? Think about what you just said, Selene. That's considered a sin! A food sin. But why?! It had crossed my mind that perhaps Grezsatly was consuming my mind and making me insane very slowly. It was certainly making me think of absurd notions. Well, not likely literally, though.
But I was now feeling the feeling of a true vampire. I was aware that Grezsatly was making me one of them.
Eilif found another elk, but this time it was thinner and smaller. I wondered maybe the population of elks were the biggest here. Abel told me that finding elks were the easiest but there were only a few of them which were fat and healthy and tasty. Most were just juveniles—smaller, thinner, and barely even tasty. I asked him whether there were other animals aside from them, he nodded and said that there were lions, ponies, and giraffes, but you could find them only at rare times. He mentioned animals that had names which twisted my tongue when I tried pronouncing it. I could only guess they were crossbreeds or something like that. Those animals were genius at hiding.
The daylight faded, and was changed to a moonlight. We definitely had to go now right before anyone or everyone could find us. We stopped in front of our house.
Abel faced me.
"What are your plans for tomorrow?" He abruptly asked.
"I'll probably go check the Elder. Ask him a few things," I answered. I thought about this for times already.
"I know you know what I'm about to tell you about that. But since I don't have things to do in the house," he stopped and glanced at his siblings to confirm the thought. "Is it necessary if I sleep with. . . Sleep in your house? It takes a few miles to walk to your house."
I checked my wristwatch to see if it was late at night. It was so most probably the two guys were snoring. I nodded my head.
"We're going now, then. Take care of Selene, Abel," Angeni said.
"Okay," he replied. I actually anticipated a "you don't have to say," or "don't mention it" replies.
But when Angeni walked away, her shadow slowly disappearing, Eilif looked at his brother and gave a lingering look. After that, I caught him doing an I'm-gonna-watch-you gesture with his fingers.
The inside of the house was utterly dark, Chris slept early, probably also Tate.
When we were on the second floor, he asked me where the Elder was. I told him Chris accompanied him in going back to his village. He also said he knew there were still survivors.
"Where am I going to sleep?" He asked me from the silence.
"You'll absolutely destroy the couch when you sleep on it. But if you insist on sleeping on the cold floor, it's your choice. But if I were you, I'll rather sleep with Selene and warm myself."
He laughed. "I'll warm myself. I'll want to sleep with her. But don't be dirty-minded. I won't take your virginity yet."
"When?" I honestly admit that I was eager for sex right now.
He stared up like he was musing. "Now?" He smirked.
I took steps forward toward him. When I did, I raised the heels of my feet so I could reach his ears. "I know you fuck and you don't make love, but they will hear it, Abel. They will hear it."
I heard him sigh. "I respect women, Selene. You perfectly know that. I know this is not the right time. So, yeah. Let's just bury ourselves under the sheets."
Good.
I strangely did not feel any awkwardness when he slept beside me. Possibly because I was weary or something. So I closed my eyes and let myself fall asleep.
