*****Jacob watches me as I dip a fry into honey mustard and take a bite. I know I should slow down but I'm so hungry, I don't even care. He smiles while eyeing my every move.
I grab a fry and point it his way. "Want one?" I offer. He holds his hand up and shakes his head, politely denying.
"I'm okay," he smiles admiringly. He clears his throat and crosses his arms in front of him on the table. "What do we have to talk about?"
I almost don't want to tell him, but I know I should. It would be worst if it came up later and not now.
"I was talking to Lucas today and him and Natalie seem to be worried about me." I pause, thinking he might say something but he doesn't. "Lucas thought me being 'missing' had something to do with you."
Jacob's body instantly tenses up, clenching his jaw tightly. "What?" He mumbles lowly.
"He said he knows more about you than I think? What does that mean? Were you guys friends?"
"What does you missing have to do with me? What was he implying?" He skips over my question as anger noticeably rises in him. I lean forward and look at him.
"Jacob," I warn in a calm voice.
He snaps an eyebrow at me. "What, are you defending him?"
"No. What? I didn't even say anything?" Jacob looks down and inhales deeply. His breathing pattern returns to normal as his fists loosen up.
"I'm sorry, I just .." he doesn't finish his sentence. He hangs his head low and his eyes don't dare to look at mine. I reach for his face but he pulls back. He leans back in the seat and stares down at the table.
"I hate when people accuse me of something I wouldn't do. Of something I didn't do." He states simply, staring dead ahead.
I want to feel bad for telling him. I know if we went back to school right now, Jacob would probably punch Lucas in the face. There's a sort of betrayal in his eyes which makes me wonder. What don't I know? Where's the missing puzzle piece?
"You want to get out of here?" I ask, a sort of pity in my voice. He looks up at me, kind of confused. "Let's go somewhere."
"What about school?"
I scrunch my eyebrows in confusion. "You actually care about school now?"
"No, but I know you do." He pauses and leans forward, looking at me. "Don't skip out just because you feel bad for me."
"I don't, I just figured you could use a day pass. But I mean, hey, if you want to go back to that hell hole then be my guest." I taunt, smiling afterwards. He smiles too and crosses his arms again.
"Well fine, what do you have in mind?" He asks. After I finish my food, we walk out and go to my car. I start the engine and look over at him.
"Lets go to your house first." I say, looking over at him. He nods, but says nothing.
The car ride is silent, but I don't expect much out of him. I know his mind hasn't left the Lucas topic. I know he's still angry about it all. I'm not sure what I can do to help. He's so misunderstood and no one gets it.
Once we get to his house, I turn off the engine and wait for him to lead the way. He stays stationary, just looking at the dashboard ahead of him. I stare at him, waiting.
"What?" I inquire.
He turns to me with sad eyes. He bites his lip and says, "I'm sorry."
"For what?" I question confused.
"I was rude to you yesterday and what I said was unnecessary. I shouldn't have said those things, Aria." He shakes his head and I can tell he's beating himself up about it. There's so much guilt behind his eyes, it's painful. It almost slipped my mind the whole thing happened.
"Jacob," I start, but he interrupts me.
"No, let me finish." He snaps, more angry with himself than with me. "If you want to go off and better your education, I should be supporting you. I just never had much going for me, and most of my life I've spent by myself. But from now on, I support you, okay? Nothing less than that."
I smile at every word, feeling euphoria rise within me. I grab his face and bring my lips to his. He inhales in the kiss, but doesn't hesitate to kiss me back. He pulls away and looks content.
We exit the car and start heading towards his front door.
"Jacob! Jacob!" A woman's voice calls from behind us. We turn to see a lady walking in high heels and a tight red dress. She seems to have a limp, but that doesn't stop her from running right to Jacob.
She plants a sloppy wet kiss on his lips.
