EPILOGUE
I wake up to an empty spot beside me. I roll over and listen to faint crackling in the distance. I rub my eyes as the sun peers through the window in specks. I sit up and look around for a moment before sliding out of bed and slipping on my robe. The house around me is still but beautiful, I still can't believe it's mine — I mean ours. I peek my head into each room while walking down the halls but come up missing of any life inside.
I go to the bathroom and wash my face. After rinsing it with water, I stare at myself in the mirror for a moment. My eyes search themselves, looking for something I probably won't find. They travel to the tattoo on my arm. It's the quote Natalie wrote me that day in the hospital. One of the worst days of my life. I close my eyes for a moment, knowing I can't erase the memory but attempting to force it back into the dark corner it crawled out of. I look down at my hands and see the diamond ring on my left hand. I swivel my wrist and watch as it sparkles in the light. Chatter in the distance catches my attention and I'm drawn towards it.
I walk out into the living room to find Jacob standing over a high chair, flipping through the channels until he finds something she's satisfied with. He starts towards the kitchen, but stops when he sees me. His green eyes light up like he's spotting me for the first time. God that never gets old. He stalks over to me and slides his hands around my waist. His lips peck mine softly and stay there for a moment, almost afraid to move away. I feel for his finger and run my thumb across the wedding band wrapped around it. One of the best days of my life.
She whimpers, catching both of our attention. I walk over to the high chair and adjust my height to hers. Her eyes sparkle the same way her fathers do, showing pools of green and curiosity. She doesn't hesitate to smile when she sees me. I grab her small hand, but it barely fits in mine. Also, one of the best days of my life. I love waking up to this, waking up to her. She's beautiful in its highest form. She filled a hole in my heart I never knew was missing.
My daughter — our daughter.
