It's December, but the sun is bright and warm in the late afternoon sky. I'm wearing and a thin black hoodie with a strange pattern on the front and black skinny jeans, my usual color, relaxing on the couch by my sister, Skylar binges watching TV wasting away our winter break.
"That's it Riley, Skylar go outside for once, it's a beautiful day!" she says popping her head in to the living room.
My mom was a tall women with brown hair and blue eyes she always had a tone to her voice that you could never tell that she was about to get mad at you.
"Fine Skylar, come on," I say trying to get her unglued from the TV. I exhale loudly and jump up throwing on some converse.
Skylar and I step out the front door to be met by a cool wind, but nothing to bone chilling to be East Coast December weather. We walk down the stairs to go for a long throughout our neighborhood, mostly a long road in the middle of no were with a bunch of side streets to explore, passing by houses belonging to mostly old people and younger kids.
Sky and I talk about crazy things that come in to our heads, we share a lot of our crazy, and sometimes weird thoughts with one another.
"You think aliens are real?" Sky asks looking up in to the orangey blue sky.
My sister is very imaginative also tall, about 5'6, thin, with blue eyes, and blonde hair normally in a ponytail.
We look nothing alike I'm also tall around 5'7, but I have green eyes and brownish, red hair with flecks of blonde on the tips that I almost always wear down.
"I find it hard to believe were the only ones out there, so yes I believe in aliens" I say looking in her direction still keeping a steady pace trekking further down the street.
In the woods, across the road a large 'CRACK' rings in the silent air. I subtlety turn in the direction of the sound and see a squirrel had fallen out of the tree shake out and run back up the tree, but Sky jumped backwards almost falling into the ditch.
"Calm down you big baby, it was just a squirrel!" I say in a mocking voice.
Her face twist slightly like she may try to say a comeback, but settles back and we walk on turning down one of the side roads.
As we walked on farther and farther through the neighborhood, I began to see the sun set to a deeper orange in the sky.
"Hey, we should get back, it's getting late," I say, not realizing how late it had gotten while we were walking. It's going to be dark before we get home, but hopefully we'll be close enough.
There was a big house renovation going on down this road that was always quit noisy and one can always hear children playing in their backyards, but it was oddly quiet. I hear a leaf crunch, but think nothing of it, but of course Sky jumps turning toward the sound, but freezes in her tacks. I stare at her face which has turned white; I look in the direction of her eyes to see a squirrel, but this time it was half way out of the mouth of a man looking thing, with a face whiter than Skylar's with blood shot eyes that looked as if they were dripping slightly, dressed in construction gear.
"Are you alright?" I called out to the man down the street.
No reply.
Then he begins to run at us with a crazed look as he starts to nash his teeth. I grabbed Skylar's arm and pulled her with me.
"RUN!!" I yelled, dragging her, still being in a state of utter shock.
I run up to a gate in front of one of the largest homes in the neighborhood. Quickly, I help Sky over it then pull myself over and run up the long driveway. Running past nice cars and a garden with a fountain in the middle, this place was beautiful. I run up the front stairs to this massive house and bang on the door.
"Let me in, help!" I don't think I would open the door if I heard someone screaming.
There stood a boy about thirteen, about Sky's age. I push through and slam the door shut and lock it.
"What you doing in my house? Who are you?" he yells bombarding me with questions.
"SHUT UP!!!" I yell louder, trying to catch my breath by sliding to the floor putting my hands over my ears and realize what just happened.
"You can't talk to me like that, this is my house," I ignore him for a while, just trying to catch my breath.
"Riley and this is—" I say before being cut off.
"I know who she is, she rides my bus and is in some of my classes," he interrupts me.
I look at Sky who is just starring off in the distance, still white as snow not really moving.
"Sky, look at me," I say as calmly as I could, grabbing her shoulders.
Skylar then begins screaming her head off, and passes out falling into my arms.
