"It wasn't enough."

Arin looked out into the sea, the sand between his toes. He was not at peace though. There was a storm and it was coming. It was grey and it was dark--and why was he so ready for it? Why did he know the storm? And he felt another hand upon his shoulder but he couldn't turn around.

It began to rain.

And he wanted to move but he couldn't. He felt another hand on his hip, and his feet give out as he struggled to move, and the storm was stretching to meet the coast. The storm was consuming him.

"Please." He tried to say, but there was sand in his throat and he was naked and facedown. He was nothing. He didn't know how, but the world had stripped him down; and there were arms keeping him held to the ground.

The storm hit with pelts of ice like rapid fire bullets, and the wind in his face was just as harsh. But it wasn't enough to blow the man on his back away. The man from behind.

Through the pain, he heard his name.

"Arin."

He was crying, it was raining, everything was blurry but one thing was clear.

"Arin! Arin come on."

I can't I can't. Arin thought, but he could feel the storm around him slowly falling away, the pressure in his chest fading.

"Arin let's go! Everything's going to be okay. Remember? Sing it with me, bubby!"

Arin felt warmth on his cheeks, as the tears fell and a voice resonated happily in his ears.

stars in rose water,
she drinks under the moon.
call of the wild, call of the moon

the innocent smile of the sun,
shines only when she's done
tucking her blues away

Arin could feel his chest flood, but he was slowly floating up. He hummed along, trying to shush out the pain; completely stop the hurricane from consuming him.

all the boys drive cars
all the girls get smart
and time is just a number on today

Arin breathed, the pressure off his back. He kept singing along with the voice.

you're a little tired
but the stars are always wired
and they will always give you light

let them shine, let them shine
let you shine
it's gonna be alright

That morning, Arin bolted awake, tears streaming down his face.
It was very quiet.

He stared at the phone with no expression, his fingers tapping a steady rhythm next to it. He was contemplating a phone call he promised himself he'd never make again. But he was hurt. Everything hurt.

He closed his eyes as anxiety bubbled in his chest. He heard the voice again.

"Bubby, how come daddy leaves you all these bruises?"

"Just be lucky he doesn't leave them on you."

"What did you do wrong?"

"I don't know."

"Will I find out when I'm older?"
