*ELISE'S P.O.V*I walked around in circles, biting my nails nervously. I've been here for exactly four hours now. My parents called and asked where I was. I told them I was with Riley at the hospital, Taylor had an accident. They were worried at first and told me to be home early. "Elise, you're making me more nervous. Sit down, please," quivered Riley. I let out a sigh and sat down between Daniel and her. "I just can't be still, Riley. What if Taylor can't survive this? We haven't heard anything from the doctor or any nurse!"
Riley placed a hand on my shoulder. "It'll be okay."
She always did this on similar situations, just to calm not only me, but anyone else. Like that time when we found out Daniel's sister was gone missing. Daniel was extremely depressed during those days at school. Even though his sister was a complete rebel, they still cared and loved each other. Daniel failed a quiz, two exams, and didn't do his project. It was a mess. Two weeks later, they found out she was in Idaho with her boyfriend. It was weird at first, because Daniel's parents thought she was in a Band-trip, but she would've mentioned it at least. But no, she was only vacationing with her boyfriend. Daniel's sister, Maia, is an inspiration to Taylor. Not only is Maia a total wreck and a rebel, but she is the lead singer in a rock band. Now I don't know if Taylor would be able to hear her sing again.
A nurse interrupted my deep thoughts. She came in with a list, had her blonde hair tied up in a bun, and had glasses. I stood up and walked towards her. "Are you Elise Davis?"
"Yes,"
"Taylor is miraculously alive and is currently stable," the nurse started. I sighed in relief before placing my hand over my chest. "It looks like the murderer who tried to kill her was aiming directly to her lungs, luckily, she could defend herself, but that wasn't enough. It'll take a long time for her to actually recover from this. I only ask for your patience, for the visits start on Thursday from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Have a good day,"
"Thank you," I said as I turned around to walk towards Riley and Daniel. "Taylor is alive. Visits are allowed on Thursday from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm." I stated. "Really? Oh my god! She's alive," cried Riley. Daniel took a deep breath. "Had me so scared."
"I think it's time to go home. Since we know something," opined Riley, grabbing her purse and zipping up her dark blue jacket. "You guys'll come back Thursday, right?" asked Daniel. Riley and I both nodded. "Good. See you guys at school,"
The street was dark and silent. Too silent. I gulped and started to walk a bit faster. I'm not usually paranoid, but something told me to walk faster. My phone started vibrating. I took it out of my coat pocket and when I was about to turn it on, it started vibrating uncontrollably, making me drop it to the floor. I bent over to pick it up, it turned on by itself and saw a figure coming out of my phone.
How could this be possible?!
I backed away.
It was Ben. My throat burns.
"Hey, Elise, sorry to come in like this. Are you free now?"
"Why,"
"I wanted to invite you over to hang out. Let's be honest, we can't keep on lying to ourselves, yes, maybe we have met in the...past. And maybe it is a little awkward now because we're grown ups, but for fuck's sake, can't we fucking go back to normal?" he murmured the last word. My eyes widened from what he had told me. But only two words came out of my mouth. "I'm sorry."
"It's cool. I heard what happened,"
"Huh?" I questioned, bending over to get my phone. "You're ex....he cheated on you, didn't he--?"
"How do you know--"
"It doesn't matter how I know. He's an ass for not appreciating what he had. You're a great person," he stated. I felt how my cheeks were starting to burn slightly. "Look, Ben, I'm sorry for how I acted before. I was stressed and pissed--"
"It's alright. When can we hang out though?" he questioned.
"Um, it can't be this week. One of my best friends is currently at the hospital. Somebody tried to kill her. So I'll be visiting her from now and then," I remarked. "Who tried to kill her?" he asked me.
"I don't know."
Before he could've say anything, my phone started to ring. My dad. "Oh, I got to go. But, we'll hang out soon. I promise."
"Oh, okay, see ya,"
"Goodnight,"
.....
Taylor was sitting on her hospital bed, laughing over at what Riley had just told her. Daniel sneaked in some food from Wendy's for Taylor. "It would have been great to trick or treat this year," said Riley. "What's stopping you?" asked Taylor to Riley. "You."
"What,"
"We are not going trick or treating without you, Taylor," said Daniel. Daniel glanced over at me, "I would say the same thing about you, but you never trick or treat."
"You're boring and old," added Riley, laughing.
"Actually, I was thinking on going out trick or treating this year, but since Taylor...."
Taylor spit out her Fanta grape soda. "What? You? Trick or treating? Don't make me laugh,"
"Yeah," I shrugged. "But, we have like two weeks before Halloween. Maybe you'll get out of the hospital before Halloween. Who knows?"
"If I get out of the hospital before Halloween, I wanna dress up as an awesome wolf girl." said Taylor, munching on her last chicken nugget. "I was thinking a Ravenclaw girl? Luna?" I opined. Daniel, Taylor and Riley gave me a puzzled look. "Raven-- what?" asked Riley. I let out a sigh before answering, "Harry Potter."
"I wanna be Hatsune Miku!" squealed Riley.
"I was thinking maybe Pennywise," muttered Daniel.
I had to go trick or treating this year. This was my senior year. My last year with Taylor, Riley and Daniel. Since the four of us will be going to different collages. Taylor and Daniel will hopefully be future athletics. Riley wants to be a veterinarian. And me? I want to be a musician. A piano teacher or a professional musician. Maybe all those dreams will shatter. I was chosen for some other kind of destiny. A destiny I never asked for. A destiny I never wanted. To protect the proxy from anything, even though she is currently under analysis. Maybe I will never be a professional musician, or a piano teacher. Maybe....I won't be there when me or my friends graduate from Collage. Or maybe I will never marry a man by 30 and have kids by 35.
I'll probably never give my future children pancakes with orange juice in the morning before they head to school. I'll probably never read them a story before bed and scare their monsters away. I'll probably never dress them up for school or prepare some coffee for my future husband. Maybe I will never see the smiling faces of my parents, proud of my accomplishments.
Instead, just pure sadness.
