Ballet Shoes and Bruises

She danced
On broken toes
In shoes too tight
To put on the show

Her arms raised above her head
Her fingers reached for the stars
She spun round like a planet
Listening to no one but her heart

Her makeup was running
Her dress was torn
Her hair was falling out of place
She had weathered the storm

People always seemed to criticize
Her posture, her poses
When all she really wanted
Was a little bouquet of roses

She wanted a little applause
A few happy tears
She wanted to be graceful
Beautiful, without the trickster mirrors

So she danced
With a smile on her face
Even though no one loved her
Because at least she was on stage

Her feet glided across the cracked wood
Her back stood up straight
She spun around like a princess
Making her own fate

And when her performance finished
She began to applaud
For she was proud
Of her graceful flaws
