“Get off me!” I huff, bristling beneath the heavy weight of Matthew as he pins me down in our combat. I struggle, trying helplessly to get him off me but to no avail. In human form, there is no way around the fact that this male is stronger than me.

With hard black eyes and strong hands pinning down both my arms as I writhe, he scoffs when he says, “with pleasure.”

In an instant, he presses me deeper into the earth for a long moment before getting off me to turn to the cheering crowd. My traitorous crowd of warriors are happy he won as they rush towards him to congratulate him while I stiffly sit up and brush dust off myself and frown over my defeat. I didn’t want to lose to Matthew today. It’s too much grease to his elbow and in this time of animosity between us, I don’t need anymore grease added to his elbow.

When I finally make it up to my feet, I glare at Matthew for a bit, watching the thick sheen of sweat enveloping his back. The muscles on his back pulsate, highlighting themselves in all the right places and I curse myself for staring. I shouldn’t be staring.

Mer rushing over with a worried expression to where I am standing in all my defeated shame has my gaze moving away from Matthew who’s conversing with his ‘fan-girls’ to her. Her whisper into my ear is soft but by the way Matthew briskly turns, I know he hears.

In all honesty, I’d turn around as quick with this news too. Being told that Alpha Brian has just arrived and requires my presence has the effect of heavy un-curtailed dread lacerating itself into my veins like an uneven blade.

I sigh, re-compose myself, tell Mer to inform him that I’ll be with him once I’ve had a change of clothes and take him to my office before walking away leaving Matthew to dismiss his very supportive warriors all on his own.

He gave me two weeks to decide and no doubt, exactly two weeks later, he’s back. I know he wants my decision and I’m happy I’ve made it despite the way I feel dreadful about having to confirm to this man that indeed, I do agree to marry his son.

Before I can close my bedroom door behind me, a panting Matthew pushes his way through. His shirt has so many creases and his long, messy hair is partly plagued with dust. I give him the most incredulous look I can muster, not understanding what has possessed him as I stare from him to the wide bedroom door and back to him.

As if anticipating my question, he blatantly shoves his hands into his pockets and says, “we need to talk.”

“And we will. After my talk with Alpha Brian,” I express, still holding the door wide open with my hand. “So if you don’t mind, please leave so I can get changed.”

“No,” he shakes his head distinctively, his stubbornness eminent. “We talk now.”

“Matthew, whatever you have to say can wait. I need to change clothes and I need to talk to Alpha Brian so please, get out.”

Despite my stern tone, he stays planted where he is standing. His dull yet rebellious eyes force an exasperated exhale from my lips before I slam the door, sealing us both in.

“Since I have little time for your tantrum, I’ll just have to change while you say whatever you have to,” I pause to walk past him, towards my wardrobe and open it. “You won’t be the first male to see me naked, anyway.”

I can hear Matthew’s sharp intake of breath at those words and I understand why. I’ve always had a knack for playing on the desires of men whether I intend to or not but in his case, I’m just too tired to think up easy ways to make him leave. I know Matthew. His stubbornness is worse than the roots of the oldest living tree in existence. My stubbornness holds no torch to it.
