Three Years Later...."You have to sign these documents," Mer hands a file over to me and I groan, tired. Despite the years, I still hate the paperwork part of this job.
The past three years have definitely been remarkable. After Nessa and Logan cornered us with their whole debacle of needing to break the bond between Lorena and Logan and kidnapping Lorena's son in the process, Matthew did it, giving up his Alpha wolf in the process. That rendered my pack Alpha-less. So despite my reservations, I became Alpha again. Some things are just destiny I guess. You can only delay the outcome for so long and the perfect example is my Alpha position. I never actually wanted it and I spent a long time running but yet, I have been Alpha since that incident and it's been three years already.
It took a while to get used to being Alpha again, getting used to the Alpha wolf, the strength, emotions and basically re-immersing myself back into what it means to lead again. After three years, I can finally say that I'm used to it now and being Alpha isn't so bad. It's definitely not as bad as I remember it once being. It took a while but now, I'm used to it. In fact, it isn't bad at all. Tasking and tiresome as well as an emotional rollercoaster sometimes? Yes. But bad? No, not at all. Some days, I even love being Alpha. On other days, I'm just too exhausted.
"How's the academy coming along?" I ask Mer who I made my assistant a while back. When I became Alpha again, she was the only one I trusted enough to help me and so I made her my assistant. She fit right into the position.
A year ago while on vacation to the Crystal Heart Pack where my mother lives now, she met her mate. He's a really good guy. He even left his home pack to move here just to be with her because she insisted that this pack is her home and she wanted to help build it. Now, she's marked but actively trying to avoid having a child for a few years because according to her, the first few years of your life with your mate should be enjoyed and kids could take that element away. I don't know if I agree with her or not but I am certainly happy for her.
"The construction is almost complete and a lot of parents have signed their kids up which is great, Kayla! This academy is going to make a huge difference, I can feel it!" She beams, grinning from ear to ear and I smile too.
After I became Alpha again, I realised that I needed to help broaden the horizons of my pack members. Most of them really can't fight and that's because we were just never trained professionally to fight. I didn't like that so I started a fighting academy. Initially, it was just for the young adults and regular adults of my pack but it became so successful that parents requested that I build a similar academy but this time for the younger people of my pack; the kids, pre-teens and teenagers. Considering it was very highly requested, nine months back, I started the project. The construction for the second academy began and now, it is almost complete which I am really excited about and greatly looking forward to.
I'm just glad that I was able to bring this to my pack - a place where they can learn to defend themselves so they never feel powerless. Not only am I happy about it but so is everyone else that lives here - which is mostly women. This makes me even happier because at least now, I am helping the females of my pack understand that being born a female doesn't automatically make you less than anyone born a male. It doesn't immediately count as any sort of disqualification. Now, in some way, I have managed to give everyone equal opportunities.
I sign the final document and hand it over to Mer, standing up from my chair. Mer takes it from me and I leave my office, going downstairs.
Jane and my father are seated on the sofa, having cookies when they see me, their eyes lighting up at my presence.
"Mikayla, have some," Jane says, calling my attention as she offers me the bowl of cookies.
I decline and she frowns but doesn't insist. Instead, she and my father go back to eating.
