"What the hell is happening to her?" Rowan demanded.
Yrene paced back and forth to avoid meeting the King's wrath. "I am not sure yet. It seems to be some sort of growth in magic."
Rowan glanced towards the closed bedroom doors. "So she just needs to control it and she will be ok?"
"Possibly. It's too early to be identified. We have never seen something like this," Yrene confessed.
Rowan clamped down on the urge to punch the nearest wall. Instead he ground out, "what about Elentiya and Fenrys?"
Yrene shrugged. "They are carranam, just like you and Aelin."
He tired not to growl at the healer. It wasn't her fault.
"What did you do during your trip?"
Rowan's head filled with every beautiful and intimate moment he had spent with his mate during those few days.
Yrene nodded in understanding. "I will reassess her later when she is conscious."
Luca and Evangeline burst through the doors into the foyer. They were both panting with grins and worry lines.
"Lysandra is going to give birth!" Evangeline cried at the healer.
They all broke into a run towards Lysandra's chambers.
Rowan turned to the healer. "Make sure no harm comes to the child and that Lysandra lives through it." Aelin couldn't lose her good friend.
Yrene nodded and scurried into Lysandra's rooms.
Rowan turned to Luca, "You wait outside with Evangeline. You are to come and inform me once it has finished."
Aedion was sprinting towards them. "Is she ok?"
Rowan, of course, hadn't gone in Lysandra's rooms out of respect for the woman - also he wanted to get back to his Queen who lays defenceless in her restorative sleep.
Rowan clasped his brother on the shoulder. "Everything will be ok. You will be a great father."
Aedion smiled at him before he ran into the rooms.
Rowan hurried back to his wife. Aelin lay still in their bed, the sound of her even breathing and her heartbeat were the only signs she was alive.
He sat on the edge of the bed and stroked her hair. Someone could be using magic to hurt Aelin - or to implant something inside her. Maybe her power was indeed growing, but Rowan's instincts told him his mate could handle that.
"What did you do on your trip?"
What had they done that could be causing his Fireheart so much pain?
It felt like burning according to his Queen. It had to be magic - If not Aelin's, the it belonged to someone else.
Except there had been no one else around besides himself on their trip. Had he done this to her somehow? Was his power making hers retaliate inside somehow?
Rowan looked down at his mate. He wouldn't be able to forgive himself if he had hurt her some way.
Luca barged in some time later, crying "It's a boy!"
Rowan snarled at him to keep his voice down because Aelin was now stirring in her sleep.
Luca told him how Lysandra was fine and how the infant was fine too. That was a relief, at least his wife could wake up to some good news: that she now had a nephew.
Rowan knew the relief Aedion would be feeling that everyone was healthy and ok. He couldn't bare it if Aelin almost died again, despite how much he would like to have a sibling for Elentiya to play with.
Rowan snapped his head to Luca. "I need to speak with Yrene right away."
