"Rowan!" Aelin shouted, one foot in the hallway, the other in the training hall. "Rowan! Move your immortal ass!"

A hawk's cry could be heard before the hawk itself was spotted. Rowan shifted and glided towards her. He grabbed her shoulders.

"What is it?"

Aelin shoved him into the training hall.

A small jade-green sea dragon was stretched out on the floor, water appearing from the air to keep itself alive.

Rowan rubbed his eyes. "I didn't know Ly-"

"It's not her," Aelin said, grinning. "It's Elentiya."

Rowan looked back at the creature. It's eyes... Turquoise and gold. "She managed to shift." The sea-dragon grumbled as if Elentiya was trying to speak. "Shift back," Rowan encouraged.

The sea-dragon wriggled its head. No.

"She doesn't know how to shift back," Aelin said, pacing up and down the hall. "I have already sent for Lysandra. Elentiya is using her power to keep herself alive but what if..." Aelin shook her head.

What if Elentiya reaches a burnout?

Lysandra barged through the doors, her bump starting to show. She skidded to a stop in front of the creature. She studied the sea-dragon, then Aelin's face. "I see," she murmured.

There was a flash of blinding light and another, much larger, sea-dragon appeared. Elentiya's water magic expanded to cover the both of them.

Rowan took Aelin's hand and dragged her into the hallway. Elentiya definitely would not shift if she felt pressured. Rowan cupped Aelin's face and lowered his head to kiss her.

Aelin took a deep breath. "Shit," she whispered. "We are in so much shit."

Rowan chuckled softly. "It's not that bad." He rubbed small circles on her back. "It's her first time, and we had no idea what she would shift into. At least we have a shifter on our side, who can help our daughter control it better."

There was a pulse of light from behind the door and then...

Elentiya chuckled. "Lysandra," she said.

Rowan pushed open the door but Aelin gripped his arm.

She swallowed. "Fenrys will know after this... He'll know what, exactly, their bond is."

Rowan clenched his jaw. He didn't want to think about that just yet. He didn't want Elentiya to be tied down before she had even grown up.

"He wouldn't do that," Aelin said quietly, as if she had read his thoughts. "He helped me out, remember? He convinced Maeve to get me that healer. If it wasn't for him, you would have never found me alive."

No, if it hadn't been for Fenrys convincing Maeve that she would indeed die during the next whipping, Rowan would have been bringing Aelin's corpse to Orynth instead. And Elentiya would not be in front of him right now.

Again, I know it's short but it's just a one-shot. Just a reminder: if you haven't read Saviour of Ashes, please do. It continues on from EoS but mainly focuses on the main gang (i.e. saving Aelin, her and Rowan being together [or are they?], what happens to them after the war). These one-shots continue after Saviour of Ashes.
