Not even a week after everyone was released, the everyday usual panic returned. The Varia flew back to Italy, along with Dino and the Giglio Nero family. All went back to 'normal', as normal as Namimori got, at least.
Hibari stopped being so possessive after Mai had proven herself able of self defense -he didn't know she was having Mukuro help her, whoops. He helped by sparring with her, although he was always too much so it only happened once, Mai ended up fainting from embarrassment. But thanks to her newfound freedom, she could visit Mukuro freely, despite the clingy attitude he has towards her, the little boy, Fran, too.
The apple hood wearing kid was cute though, so it was fine. He helped her as a fellow student too, a little over the top at times, but the snarky boy was amusing. He could annoy Mukuro in one sentence.
Ah, Fon too, his lengthy speeches of how great martial arts were convinced her in the end. She didn't have the strength he had, but with the use of her mist flames, it makes her job of rendering the opponent unconscious much easier.
Enough about her training and how she could protect herself against someone largely stronger than her, with exceptions of superhuman weirdos and experienced flame wielders.
Time passed peacefully, save the excessive training, Tsuna's consistent complaining about Reborn's torturous methods, save Hibari jumping on her every time she was the tiniest bit vulnerable, save Mukuro jumping on her anyway -as soon as she walked through the door-, save Byakuran sending her way too many flowers for some reason, save a lot of things.
She graduated middle school, then entered high school, a different one to the Vongola group; same as Hibari, though. It was one she chose, a prestigious academy just outside of Namimori -it was a little difficult for Hibari on the first days, until he established the hierarchy.
Then she entered university with Hibari, the best in the prefecture, he wouldn't have any less. It was a little way outside of Namimori, which had no universities, so they commuted by train everyday. He didn't like being away from Namimori, but accepted it as a part of growing older.
After about a year of grudgingly attending high school.
So, just about five, four and a half, years had passed by speedily. Making room for so many filler omg you should prepare yo'self. But since I h- just remembered an 8018 doujinshi gonna do that. I should credit them tbh.
Hibari knew that the reason Mai never had friends was because he was around, it wasn't insulting in the least for him, he preferred zero crowds. -She did have those three in the (two) year below, but they were younger than her, she needs an actual friend her age, right? (Excluding that one girl that annoyed the hell out of him.) That's what Hibari thought at least; he wasn't too good with the topic, having never had a friend to his name, Kusakabe's the closest anyone's ever gotten. Speaking of Kusakabe, he was setting the foundation for the underground disciplinary committee, not so coincidentally called the Foundation.
Right, back to friends.
He actually avoided his precious girlfriend at school. He didn't speak to her until they were alone, frankly, it was self inflicted torture for him. He couldn't kiss her at school, hug her, touch her, nothing. He had his own -new- reception room, built it himself, and had taken over the college -just like he did for anywhere he was enrolled.
But it wasn't used as a private rendezvous point, nope, not a place that he could take advantage of and -take advantage- of her. -Like he first imagined it to be.
Besides Hibari, let's go through Mai's day. -It's nearing the end of the first year, when this is 'set'.
Because of the distance between Hibari's house and the college, Mai and Hibari had to wake up much earlier than before. If they woke up at a normal time for school, since they always woke up around 5:00-6:00 previously, it wasn't all that difficult. She would wake in his warm embrace, nothing too peculiar, she'd grown to like the mornings for this simple reason, miss it when she got up, however. She'd pop into the bathroom and brush her long, long, hair; styling some clumps back into a plait and tied behind her head. Clean her teeth, and then get dressed. There was no uniform for the college, Hibari usually wore a suit -thanks to Reborn, he'd gotten so used to them he began wearing them more often, but he wore casual clothes sometimes too. Mostly dark toned and not showing off much. She didn't want others ogling him, so it was fine.
Her clothing was cute, fairly normal, light colours and some dark, just girl clothes really. Dresses, skirts, shorts, cute blouses, sometimes fancy attire, to match Hibari -it was appealing sometimes.
Anyway, she would begin cooking breakfast, which she'd eat with Hibari in a comfortable silence, sometimes a little small talk would occur. She'd wash the plates and then get ready to go.
Her hand would be immediately taken by his, as soon as they're out the house, since he wants to 'recharge his energy' as much as possible before going without her for like eight hours.
"Want one?" Mai offered as that sat on a bench in the train station, it was fairly empty, so it was just them there really. Mai'd gone and bought some pocky, of course, from the vendor, she was holding the box out to him now.
For the sake of appearances, shitty pun intended, Hibari has barely noticeable, unless you're Mai or actually observant, shorter hair. A little messier too, nothing compared to his TYL self.
He smirked slightly, taking one from the packet; Mai went to turn back around and take one for herself when he'd pushed it against her closed mouth, which opened and held onto the stick by instinct.
She mumbled something intelligible before blushing when Hibari took the other end in his mouth. Let's just say PDA and overall affection came so easily to him now, it was like a second nature. She liked it, as much as she denied it.
His smirk was not comforting in the least.
Slowly, she began to nibble on the chocolate, knowing the ending wouldn't change. Mai was a little surprised to see Hibari wasn't taking giant bites out of it, it calmed her down a tad.
As they inched closer, he'd once again laced his fingers with hers, causing more embarrassment to well up inside of her. She could hear the cooing from people passing by, there were security cameras too! In the end, just as their noses were about to touch, she broke off her end of the pocky and retreated back, ashamed.
Then in a second, he'd shoved his lips onto hers, 'playing' for a little while, rendering her absolutely frozen with shame; not that she didn't reciprocate; before he took the short stick of chocolate and biscuit into his own mouth and pulled away, chewing and swallowing the treat before kissing her once more, an unneeded, yet appreciated, gesture.
Then their train came. Usually, Hibari would enter a different car to her and sit alone, while Mai would travel with a friend she'd made, who happened to take the same train, who also happened to be terrified of Hibari; but as the said friend bounded off the train to collect Mai...
She saw her supposed friend and that demon prefect publicly making out with each other. Her first impression of Mai was a pure, untouched, Goddess of innocence and protection. A shy little cute girl sat in the corner, smart and strong, and really beautiful woman.
That had never had a boyfriend in her life, nor had she ever gone past hugging.
Well she'd gone a lot farther than that, Miss friend.
When Hibari noticed someone gawking at them, he clicked his tongue and stood up, pulling Mai up with him.
"Y-Y-Y-Y-You....!?"
"A-Ah... caught..." Hibari just casually put an arm around her waist, no point in hiding it now.
At least the reception room can be put to use now.
-So from then on, he rode in Mai's car with her jittery and overprotective friend. It was unbearably irritating, but for Mai, anything.
