Here we are back at the current timeline. Rest assured there will be crappily placed flashbacks for filler.
It was around Mai's second year into university; she was studying hard despite being unsure of what she actually wanted to be, except a part of the mafia - that was practically set in stone.
She was taking a criminology course on a whim only because it seemed like the most helpful for where she's headed.Nowadays Mai was engrossed in her studies, buried in books at every single moment. It was fine when they first entered university since Mai finally let him release his pent up emotion of four years, that was a moment etched into his memory. However, now she was so tied down by all the courses and material there was barely any time for talking, let alone making love. She still did the heavy chores, cleaning the house, cooking meals, tidying the rooms, but any spare time was spent studying.
Hibari should have been doing the same but he was already acing his classes, so who cares?
He wasn't complaining, Mai always set time aside on the weekends for them to spend together. It was mostly catching up and cuddling on the sofa but it was a peaceful time amidst all the chaos happening.
Just a few months ago Reborn reported to all of the Vongola tenth generation that an uprising of a smaller (In Reborn's words - insignificant) Famiglia was currently threatening well known allies of the Vongola, as well as the maturing Tenth Generation in Namimori. As soon as he relayed the news a full out attack was launched on the dojo in which they gathered. Mukuro and Hibari dealt with them all swiftly, barely giving space for the others to fight. They both had already registered the strange presences, and Mai, knowing them quite well, had caught on pretty quick too -thanks to that, she ducked in time for a bullet to pass right through where her head once was.
As soon as the bullets started, Tsuna cowered for a single second before getting kicked by Reborn and forced to fight the thugs that had already been wiped out by his other guardians. Lambo was in the corner crying into Mai's shoulder, she herself wasn't that shook, it was a change from her old self. Although the fact that both Mukuro and Hibari were 'fawning' over her in their own ways was distracting enough.
Of course this ended in a heated brawl. To be honest, Mai had began to think that Mukuro didn't actually have feelings for her but he just really liked seeing Hibari's reactions - and hers too probably. It didn't matter to her, she liked him a lot no matter what happened in the past.
She knew since she was with Hibari at that point... it was far too difficult to keep him under control after that incident. He had nothing but insults for Mukuro then - now, it's not so different but there's the littlest bit of recognition. Mai thought Mukuro was cruel, anyone would, however her opinion changed a little once she found out about his background, then again when they met for the first time -past sins forgotten. He was a strange but nice person. A least she thinks so - to her he is...
Maybe her mind was clouded, she thought Hibari was a nice person too...
Hibari had just been to the office building that was liberated and turned into the Foundation's first headquarters. The underground plans for the shelter were already underway and being built since Reborn thought it necessary. Alas it wasn't ready for them to move their stuff in and use it as a main base yet, so crummy building it was.
He was there to pick up some information and hear Kusakabe's recent report, all related to this new stupid enemy. It was getting worse. The amount of assassins sent after Tsuna increased from five to ten, the guardians were getting identified and targeted also... Thankfully their families haven't gotten involved yet but it's just a matter of time. Therefore Mai was in danger too.
Although she was in danger...
Hibari came home to complete darkness, he couldn't even tell if there were lights on further in since the doors were shut. He removed his shoes and coat before beginning his search for Mai, who he suspected was still studying without a care. She was in her room before he left... however when he checked there were only a few books littered on the floor. Seeing no signs of a struggle, her being kidnapped was quickly ruled out - that and murder. So she was probably still here somewhere.
Although he always ended up investigating his own house if he couldn't find Mai straight away, she's never actually been kidnapped or hurt since she started living there. Save a few exceptions like scraping herself on the veranda when she tripped or cutting herself when cooking dinner.
Anyway, he checked the bathroom closest to her room, not knocking or having any shame. He barged in there fully prepared to see her bathing and screaming at his appearance, he was prepared to join her too, but she wasn't in there. A shame, truly.
Next place was just the next door he came across, it happened to be his own room.
He was certain that there wasn't a mound of books in the middle of his floor when he left. He almost smiled but the usual frown he wore didn't waver. His eyes softened a little as they always did when Mai entered his vision.
Stepping cautiously over the scattered books, textbooks and notepads alike, he encountered a collapsed body in the middle. Sleeping on almost a bed of books and paper, her appearance was disheveled; her dress was strewn out over the floor; and her legs were curled up cutely into her chest. She was the most beautiful when asleep.Mai didn't make a sound other than soft breathing. Although her hair was a mess it didn't do anything to get in the way of her elegance. She didn't drool, snore, or thrash; sometimes it was hard to tell if she was sleeping or if she was in a coma.
The best part of her sleeping self was that she always had a smile on her face.
He could only wonder why she was in his room but it wasn't too hard of a question to answer.
Not wasting another second to admire her; he had the rest of his life to do that; he bundled her up in his arms before proceeding to lay her on his bed - then getting ready to sleep himself.
