Catherine's POV
If I had known that a single meeting could shatter the chains I had been bound in, I would have been more careful. But fate never gives warnings — it strikes when you least expect.
I was sixteen, but my heart already carried scars most grown wolves couldn't bear. Hated by my brother, despised by my pack, and rejected by the one who was supposed to love me most — my mate. I thought I had no reason left to breathe, no strength left to fight.
And yet, in the midst of my despair, a stranger appeared. His voice was calm, his eyes unfamiliar, but something about him pulled me in. I should have been afraid. I should have run. But instead, I trusted him.
I didn't know then that the choice to follow him would change everything. That the stranger who offered me comfort would soon become the storm that rewrote my destiny.
"What is your name?" he asked, bending down to my level.
"Catherine Brown," I replied softly, scared he might scold me for speaking loudly.
"Want to go out and get some fresh air?" he asked, and I immediately agreed — not thinking that I was going with a stranger.
Somewhere in my heart, I knew I could trust him, so I followed him out.
He took me to the stream below the hills where I used to play. Being there reminded me of my old life, which brought tears to my eyes.
"Tell me, what is wrong? Don't you have anyone to look after you? You're far too small and fragile for your age. What are you, 14?" he enquired.
"I'm 16," I replied slowly.
"Your parents?" he questioned.
"My parents passed away in a rogue attack."
"Who did you stay with after that?"
"My brother," I muttered.
"Where is he?" he asked.
"He lives in this pack, but he hates me. He thinks I killed our parents," I said sadly.
"Oh, so what about your other friends?"
"I don't have anyone except my brother, and he treats me like dirt," I started crying.
He came forward and pulled me into a hug.
"Shh... it's okay. Don't cry," he tried to soothe me.
I sobbed continuously and wiped my nose with the back of my hand. It was gross, but I guess he didn't mind.
"So what are you planning to do? Have you found your mate?"
"Yes," I said and started sobbing again, thinking of the rejection.
"Who is it?" he asked, scrutinizing me.
"Tell me, so I can leave you under his care," he explained.
"He doesn't want me," I whispered softly through my tears.
"Why wouldn't he? He's your mate. He will love you, take care of you, and protect you," he continued.
He didn't know that my mate wouldn't do any of those things; he despised me like the rest of the pack.
"He rejected me," I said. He went into shock, which later turned to anger.
He started growling. His eyes changed from black to brown, indicating that his wolf was trying to take control.
I moved away from him, scared he might hurt me if he lost control, but my movement caught his attention and he tried to calm down.
"Listen to me, I'm not going to hurt you. Sorry, I just got angry that your mate rejected you. How dare he? Tell me, who is it? I'm going to kill him," he said, raging with anger.
