Feeling Lost

Cand's POV

The wolves and Typhors were kind enough to search through their forest looking for a little red dragon, but nothing came up after so long of searching. I was starting to loose hope that I would never see the little whelp again.

The thought had crossed my mind to have my army burn down the trees in the search, but then that would make me just as bad as the king I removed. And what if we did and still found nothing?

I was overjoyed today when some news finally came running into the courtyard in the shape of a brown and black wolf.

I was there doing some training with my fellow dragons when he approached me. He was panting heavily from the effort of his run across the plains. He tried to bow to me but his legs were trembling with fatigue.

Your Majesty! I know why we have found no sign of the dragon in the forest. He is not in the forest.

The wolf's voice was inside my head, like a red dragon. I realized a while back that the wolves communicate through telepathy. They really are amazing creatures.

The other dragons around me heard him too and they all froze and looked at the wolf with quizzical faces. They knew how worried I was. It was hard for me to hide it.

"If not in the forest, then where?" I asked, almost in a demanding tone. I felt like we were looking in the wrong place, it turns out we were.

The wolf sighed and gathered himself. He shivered as if he was afraid of saying it, but finally I heard his voice again.

He... He is in the Valley of Fear. I saw the little dragon with a unicorn. They seemed to be working together and gathering boulders from the side of the mountains on the day I spotted him. I suspect that some sort of building project is going on. I also smell a ton of dark magic emanating from that valley. It will be dangerous to go there.

My heart started to race in anticipation, fear, and defeat. I knew that the Valley of Fear was where Gaelon had retreated into hiding. Why the hell would Ruinar go there? Gaelon left him for dead.

"Well we are going, at least to scout it out from above. I am the King and I will go where I wish. I want to see Ruinar with my own eyes." I turned to look at the dragons I had just been sparing with. "Who will fly with me to investigate?"

Three brave dragons volunteered to join me then I looked at the wolf with a thankful smile. "Will you ride on my back and come along? I could use the help of your special wolf senses."

The wolf hesitated but then nodded and agreed. His yellow eyes held much wisdom. He gave me a proper bow and I snorted, not really caring if he show respect to me or not. He at least seemed to have recovered from the run.

We were ready to go and the wolf jumped on to my back with ease. He only had to watch for my spinal spikes as he found a place to hold on. Once I felt hm settle on my back I lifted my head toward the sky and roared.

I then made sure that Arod and Eira would get the message of where we went, and we jumped into the sky.

We flew and flew as fast as our wings and the wind would allow. It still took us quite a while to reach the edge of Shimmer Lake for a drink. In fact it was dark already.

We should wait until morning to continue. We will see nothing in the dark, no matter how eager. The wolf suggested.

He was right of course, so reluctantly we camped out by the lake and tried to enjoy the sounds of the forest around us. I finally fell asleep to the sound of singing wolves.

It was good that we spent the night. I woke up with my fear greatly reduced. The sun warmed my wings as I stood waiting for the others by the lakeside. The wolf, named Mervin, jumped on to my back once again and we were refreshed and ready to face the terrible valley.

"Stay close to me. We do not want to attract too much attention." I said to my team. Then I was leaping into the brisk morning air.

We flew upwards, trying to get higher than the huge mountains that blocked our view of the valley beyond.

Honestly, it was a clever place to go if you did not want the rest of Angoleth to know what you are doing. The only thing was, I had no clue what awaited us. Gaelon's magic could yield anything.

We kept flying, keeping a tight formation as we went. Soon we could see the valley beyond the snow covered peaks.

But...there was nothing, nothing but a barren wasteland of ash and dirt. How could that be? Where we're all the unicorns? Where was Gaelon, and Ruinar? Something wasn't right here.

As I circled around again I searched below for even a tiny speck of red against all the grey. There was nothing.

The wolf on my back crinkled his nose in disgust, then sneezed. The dark magic in the air is intense. I would bet that some sort of spell is preventing us from seeing them.

I circled a few more times in hopes I would get a glimpse of my son, some sort of sign.

As we turned to leave rather dismayed, I wondered what the hell Gaelon was hiding from me, and why he did not take a chance to attack us with magic.

More questions is what I get, instead of answers. The most frustrating thing for a King, is to not know what goes on in his own realm.

I wish I could tell Ruinar that I feel lost without him.
