Casey shook against the bindings, her captor's hands holding her down. She sunk her teeth into his hand as he tried to gag her. He howled in pain for a second before shoving he gag in. The room was trashed, her have given a big struggle, even with Chlorophome now in her system.
Her eyes drooped until they closed, and the man carried her out of the apartment, making it seem like she was simply just asleep to passerby's.
——————-
"Hey, babe, I'm home!" Jack hollered through the apartments hours later, his eyes glued to the fridge. He didn't notice the mess as he was starving.
"Casey? Okay, I'm sorry I'm late, but Madi had a mission review for us. Where-" he cut himself off as he looked at the shattered table and the room torn apart. He ran through the rooms, Checking everywhere for her. "Casey? Babe where are you?" He was starting to freak out.
He whipped out his phone, and called Madi. "Madi! My place is a wreck. Casey's gone. Someone took her."
"Jack. We're on our way."
"Just hurr-" he cut himself off with a heavy gasp, at seeing something on the wall.
"Fear is nothing more than a figment of imagination."
He hung up and called someone else, a friend of his in SWAT, Wyatt. "Man, it's Jack. The case you are working on, with the kidnapped people. What does he write on the wall?"
"Uh, something about fear is in your head. It's changed every time. Why? What happened?"
"Casey's gone. Fear is nothing more than a figment of imagination. Its on the wall of my home."
"Oh Sh*t man!" He hollered back through the phone. "I'll send a team over ASAP."
"Thanks." He muttered through the phone and hung up.
While he waited for the teams to get there, he searched his home once again. Pacing around and around. Looking for something that couldn't be found.
After awhile, his friends showed up, all seeing him in a near catatonic state. "Jack?" Mac asked walking towards him.
"Man, He took her." He looked at the blonde then to Wyatt, as his team looked around.
"Who?"
Wyatt answered. "A man named the Nightmare, or so called. He stalks potential victims, learns their worst fear, kidnaps them and puts them in the situation, so the last thing they see before-" he hesitated and looked at Jack. "Their death, is their worst fear. He's trying to prove that fear isn't real."
Jack sat rather fast onto his couch, running his fingers through his hair. "I can't believe I let this happen."
Madi walked to him and put her hand on his shoulder. "You didn't. She's going to be fine."
"What's her fear?" Riley whispered, remembering her friend had bad enough anxiety to be on medication.
He looked up. "Buried alive. She was mistaken as a kid, for being dead, after a car crash. She slipped into a coma, her heart was barely beating, they didn't hear it. She woke up at the funeral, right as the ceremony was ending. A couple more minutes and she would've died. For real." He told them looking down as he remembered the story she had told him one late night.
"Oh my gosh." Bozer muttered.
Jack looked down again. "She shouldn't have even been in the house. I told her to come home early. I figured their was nothing else for her to do, but I still had a few files left. She was going to go home and make something."
"Jack! Casey is go-" Bozer was cut off by Riley. "Guys, you'll want to see this. I just got a weird override."
They surrounded her laptop around the table, where she was standing, Jack getting up from his seat.
"Sorry for any inconvenience. Watch and you will see I am right."
Riley clicked on "watch" which was a link to a website. It showed a video of Casey in a coffin, it was dark, but their was a flashlight next to her. She blinked a few times her breathing becoming ragged. She pressed her hands against the sides of the wall. It didn't budge. She kicked her feet out only to hit a solid surface. The pushed the ceiling as hard as she possibly could, grunting at the bullet proof glass. That's when she seemed to realize something and retracted her hands.
She was buried alive.
"Shit. Shit. Shit." She mumbled over and over slowly losing her nerve. Her hands were shaking, a look forming on her face.
Casey tried to keep herself calm, breathing in and out carefully, that's when the glass shook slightly under the weight of the dirt.
That's when she lost it.
She punched the glass around her, screaming and kicking in a wild panic. She yelled for anyone who might hear, but then her chants turned into Jacks name. "Jack! Please." Her voice was cracking on any different octaves as she continued struggling around.
That's when the video went dead.
Jack put his hands in his face, her voice echoing in his mind over and over, tears forming in his eyes. "Riley, find where that came from." He yelled his voice cracking at this dumb *sses idea of an experiment.
"On it."
Minutes later they had coordinates and Jack could only hope they weren't too late.
"Mac, how long can she breathe?"
"With the way she was freaking out, and assuming she just woke up, and assuming she got home 20 minutes after she left work, then adding time he took her, assuming he was waiting on her, 48 minutes."
Jack started the timer on his watch.
—————
When they got to the cemetery, the location of the streaming, their was a hundred different fresh graves, all without stones.
"Shit!" Jack yelled loudly knowing the person he loved so much, was buried and being tortured with her own mind.
"Stop, Jack, look."
Carved into a tree were two eyeballs, and between it a grave. "It's a good a guess as any." Bozer said running towards it, along with Jack, carrying a few shovels from the truck. Jack neared the grave first, digging roughly into the ground, knowing that time was running out for Casey.
Then just as he thought he was making progress and the hole was chest high. The timer on his watch went off. He paused looking at the team and seeing a look of defeat. He grunted and kept digging, even if she was gone, he needed to know he couldn't have done something.
That's when the shovel rattled. He had hit the coffin. He crouched down, brushing away the dirt, "Casey? Case?!" He called loudly as he saw her, breathing heavy and still thrashing around.
She was sobbing loudly, hysterical even. Casey wouldn't meet his eyes, hers wild and crazed with panic. "Hey, Case! It's okay. Case! Listen to me!" He yelled so she could hear him. He placed his hand on the glass.
"Put your hand on my hand." She looked at him, before struggling to control her body movements, reaching up and pressing it against his hand.
"Good, babe, real good, you're going to be fine." He said looking down at her. The team huddled around the hole as they tried to un bury the rest of her.
Her eyes continued to flood tears and she just couldn't keep her sobs in. "Shh. Going It's okay. We're going to get you out in a second. Then we'll get you checked out and some chocolate pretzels on the way." He tried to lighten her spirits knowing how much she loved them.
That's when Wyatt came running up to them just when they were starting to get her out of the casket. "Stop! The thing is rigged with an explosive. Everyone get back!"
But Jack stayed his eyes locked on those of his one true loves. "I'm not leaving you." he mouthed to her as she stared at him, her sobs still evident.
"Jack! We got to get back, man." Mac tried to pull him away, but Jack easily fought him off.
"NO! I am not leaving her." he insisted back. That's when Jack thought of something, for the first time in his life, he thought this might actually work.
"We gotta equal out the balance." he told Mac looking at the machine beside him, one that could easily do it.
"Casey, look at me. There are pressure plate bombs underneath you." at this she leaned her head back against the bottom. "I'm going to lift the lid, but you have to stay laying down or you'll blow us all up." he said as gently as he possibly could. "Do you promise?" She nodded, but he didn't believe her. "I want to hear you say it. Say I promise."
"I promise." she sobbed out the fear returning to her in a shock wave. He had the team slowly lift the top of the coffin, and her breathing became deeper as the might air chilled her. Jack reached his hand down, just wanting to make sure he was there. Casey sobbed harder as his hands entwined with hers. "Babe, don't move. It's okay. I'm going to get you out of here." he kissed her hand softly, relishing her calloused hands. She caught her sobs in her throat, as he stroked her hand slightly. Her breathing came in hiccups, but at least she had an infinite amount left. Mac tied a rope through her belt buckle, as she continued to study the features on Jack's hand. "Now I need you to take a deep breath, close your eyes, and hold it." Jack whispered as he got up tp leave. She squeezed his hand one last time, before doing as he said.
They dumped the wave of dirt onto her and just when Casey, thought something was wrong, they pulled her out. She landed harshly onto someone, as they both fell to the ground. That's when the persons arms wrapped around her waist and pulled her into his chest. Jack had caught her, just like he always said he would.
She sobbed into his shoulder as he laid still for a second. Later, she would think maybe her weight would've crushed him, but neither of them thought of this as they held each other in their warm embrace. The paramedics surrounded them and Jack knew she needed attention. He sat up ever so slowly, Mac giving him a hand as he completely supported Casey's weight. He helped her stand, she still heavily leaning on him. The ambulance swept her away before he could blink and they second after he realized he wasn't with her, he let himself fall to pieces.
This would haunt him in nightmares forever.
