Bleeding Out- Imagine Dragons
When we went downstairs on Christmas morning, Chris was sitting on the living room floor in fuzzy pajamas, surrounded by wrapped gifts. He was actually bouncing with excitement.
"He'll be like this all day," Cass whispered. I grinned. My family never got this excited about Christmas. Sure, they faked it when we were kids, but since we got older, they had taken to writing us checks and telling us to leave them be. But this...this was amazing. "Hey, Dad."
Chris shot up and hugged us. "Merry Christmas, boys." He turned to the stairs. "Girls! Get up!"
April smiled brightly when she came down, followed by a grimacing Ari.
"Something wrong, Ari?" I teased.
"It's 5 in the morning, Chris. This is even earlier than last year," she collapsed onto the couch.
"Of course. We have to train the new additions in the ways of the Donovan family Christmas," Chris reclaimed his spot on the floor. "Sit, sit! Presents!"
I got a few new sweaters from Chris, a book I'd been meaning to read from April, and a large bag of teddy bears from Ari. Next, I handed Cass his present. He kissed my cheek before ripping into the wrapping.
"It's just a photo album," I said. To the others, it was probably strange, because they didn't know they meaning behind it. It was completely empty. After that night I found him down here, I knew exactly what to get him. He gave me the box. It was small. I knew exactly what it was from my mother. A jewelry box.
"Caspar Wesley Donovan, if that is a ring-," Ari started. I felt myself blush.
"It's not a ring, Ariana Felicity Edwards," he returned, sticking his tongue out at her before turning back to me. "Open it."
I carefully removed the paper before propping the box open.
"You shouldn't have," I looked to him.
"I did." It was a necklace. The pendant was a small heart, with a 'C' carved into it. It was beautiful. "I figured it was time to replace that old one. There's a 'T' on the other side."
I kissed his cheek, trying to contain my excitement. "I love-."
I shut up at a bark erupting from Chris's office. All our heads shot to him. He grinned, standing. He ran to his office and came back, a small puppy trailing behind. It sprinted over to Ari and crawled up on her chest.
"What breed is he?" April asked.
"Alaskan malamute. He'll get a lot bigger. It's basically a husky."
Cass called the puppy over and scooped it up in his arms. It licked his face. "What should we call him?"
The dog barked loudly, and we were all surprised at how much he could project with how small he was.
"What about Echo?" It didn't even register that I had spoken. My boyfriend's face broke into a grin. "Yeah?"
"Yeah." He took the dog's face into his hand. "Hi, Echo. I'm Cass."
