Chapter 31
Kate's POV
Kate and Castle stood at the same point as they had done before Martha had walked into the loft. Castle had his arm around Kate's waist and it felt nice to have his comforting arm around her. The kids pulled away from Martha and Johanna turned to them. The smile had faded a little and Kate was about to ask her what was wrong when she talked.
"Shouldn't we go? You were going to interrogate that Charles Stinson guy" she asked and Kate's eyes widened. "What?"
Kate had reacted to the fact that Johanna had memorized the man's name, not that she hadn't done that herself. But it was different, it was her job to know that.
"Eh, yeah, we should get going. Cosmo, Roy, grams gonna take care of ya today, don't do anything stupid" Castle said, snapping out of it before Kate, then Kate, Castle and Johanna, went to get their jackets. "Including you mother"Castle eventually said and they all started to chuckle.
"Richard, don't you think I can be the grown-up once in a while?" Martha asked and Kate could hear it was a rethorical question.
"Nope" Castle said before they went out the door. and Kate looked at him with narrowed eyes.
She hit him on his arm and she quickly felt him respond by smacking her ass. Kate hoped their daughter hadn't seen that cause even though she deep down knew they were still having their moments it was embarassing for her to think that her own daughter could see the playful act between her parents.
When they got to the precinct they looked around Kate's desk to find a new file on it. It was a file containing information about some Ronald Hawk. Kate raised one of her eyebrows and looked up to see where Ryan and Esposito where at.
"Hey, Beckett, Castle! Oh, uhm, hey Johanna" Ryan came towards them.
He gave her a questioning look but she just made one look that told him not to ask.
"What's this?" Kate asked and Castle took the file from her to read it through as fast as he could.
"It's their boss, we got Charles Stinson into interrogation yesterday night and after some talking he decided to give us the name of the one who killed Jacob Collins and being the one who told them to kidnap his kid" Ryan explained and Kate nodded.
'Finally' she thought to herself.
"How do you know this is really the guy?" Castle asked and Kate looked at him.
"His fingerprints were found in the victim's apartment, it wasn't in the system but once we got him over here and checked them, they matched. He's the guy" Ryan said and Gates came out of her office.
"Detective. Castle. And Johanna, what are you doing here?" she asked and looked up at Kate with a negetively surprised look.
"We didn't want to leave her at home, in case she would have any other thoughts of escaping Martha and check out some leads on her own" Kate immediately said.
Gates narrowed her eyes but didn't ask any further.
"How's the case going?" she asked and Ryan told her about Ronald Hawk.
"Did he confess yet?" Gates asked and Ryan shook his head.
"He knows we have enough evidence but he still tries to claim he's innocent" Ryan said and looked at Kate. "We thought that maybe we would get a confession if you got in there, maybe even if Jo.." his voice died when Kate immediately put her death stare on him.
"Not gonna happen" she said harsh and Esposito came into their little discussion.
"Yo, what you all talking about?" he asked and he must have seen the look Kate gave Ryan cause he took a step back. "Did you ask her?" he said and looked at Ryan who, frightened, nodded.
"Why would that do any good, detective?" Gates questioned to Ryan.
"Well, in that case she could accuse him of being a bad father or something like that" when Gates looked over at Esposito he continued. "You see, Ronald has a daughter about the same age as Johanna and it would be more personal if he got wind of the fact that his acts made them kidnap a girl who could have been his own daughter. Therefore he might give us a confession".
"That's not gonna happen" Kate snorted and put a hand on Johanna to push her behind her.
'How could they even think about putting her daughter in danger like that?! Don't they know the danger?! If it would have been any of their kids they would have never asked for it.' Kate's mind was filled with anger.
"Mom?" Johanna asked and Kate looked at her daughter. "If it helps I can do it" she said and Kate shook her head.
"No" she said and looked at Castle to search for his back-up.
"Not even for one second" he said determind and she felt relieved he was on her side in this one.
He was at her left side and since their hands were behind their backs and Gates couldn't see them, she could feel his fingers intetwin with hers.
"Mom, you will be with me in there, it's not like I will be alone, the finest detective in New York City will be in there with me" Johanna said and when Kate looked down at her she smiled her puppy-eye-smile.
"Johanna, no, I will not let you anywhere near these guys" Kate said and looked up at Ryan and Esposito. "What on earth made you think I would let this happen?" she asked them angrily.
"We decided to take our chances and ask" Esposito answered.
"Plus, it's not certain the jury would convict him if we don't get that confession, he might get cut loose if we don't get him to confess" Ryan said and Kate looked at him.
"But you said..."
"I know what I said, I said we have enough evidence, but the jury could still decide he's innocent. We need that confession" Ryan cut her off.
Kate looked at Castle, she didn't know what to do. She did not want her daughter in there, but if they needed a confession...
