Chapter 10
I stand there for a minute frowning, taking what I just heard. So, Celia's got a twin sister that she doesn't know about and Jack wants me to show her around. Well, this will be interesting. Bailey comes back down stairs after she gets off the phone.
"Sorry about that. It was mum." She says.
"Do you know how Celia is? Did she tell you?" I ask.
"You really do have a one track mind, now don't you?" She says with a sarcastic tone, but I don't think she meant it that way.
"No, not really." I say.
"Well, mum said 'She's good. I mean, not happy yet. But she just started at her new school. Not one person has recognised Victoria Violinkis yet." She says.
"What? Violinkis?" I question.
"Well, what else was she gunna make her name? Beckham?" She says with attitude.
"Bailey, be nice!" Jack defends me.
"Well, sorry then Jai." She says and walks away.
"Sorry, she's not normally like that. She only just found out her twin sister doesn't know about her. She was taken away from us when she was 10 weeks old and she was put into a foster home. I can't remember the reason, but she's pretty upset about it. She'll calm down when she gets to know you." He says and I nod slowly.
"I better go." I say and he says 'goodbye' before I walk out the door. That was the most awkward and random afternoon of my life. I asked Jack if he had Celia's number, but he wasn't allowed to talk to her. Unfortunately, he also doesn't have her number. I walked silently home and Dean surprised me with a trip to my favourite place to surf. It was an abamndoned beach just south of Sydney and we always went there. No one goes there except for us, I could say it was our special place.
*
We drove up and park on the nice green grass.
"No one has been here except for us in about the last twenty years and it is still the most perfect place. Perfect sand, perfect grass and perfect waves!" Dean's amazement makes me laugh.
"Maybe, that's why it is so perfect." I say and he looks down at me.
"Damn boy. You should be a songwriter when you grow up!" He says and shakes his head a bit. The only thing he does is joke around. I found it hilarious.
We finally paddle out of the open waves and an awkward silence takes over us as we float there, before Dean interupts the splashing water.
"You know that Bailey girl you were telling me about?" He pauses.
"Yeah.." I say.
"Well, I used to go to school with her older adoption sister. They are not real sisters though. Just listen to me, Bailey is a very... special girl. She may sound like it at the moment, but she's not a bitch. She just needs to get to know you. She's a lot like Celia once you get to know her." He says.
"Right? So, you set me up and not Jack?" I question and he slowly nods.
"Come on Dean, Why?" I compain.
"Well, I thought you might want a girl that is a friend again! I just thought of Bailey and she was the perfect match." He says.
"I can't be friends with my ex-girlfriend's twin sister!" I say and paddle on my board back into shore. After that, we pack up and drive home in silence for a bit.
"I'm sorry." He says and I look across at him from the window, but don't say a word. I don't hate Bailey, I just don't want to be her friend, I mean.... she's the exact replica, except they look a little different, of Celia! Why would he do that? To make me feel better? To make it feel like Celia is still here and not ignoring me completely?
"It's fine." I grumble and he sighs. Why did he sigh?
"Don't sigh. It's bad for your heart." I say and he chuckles.
"Thanks, Jai." He says and I stare out the window again. I couldn't stop thinking about that girl I met earlier. Could I try be her friend? She probably wouldn't let me...
*
We get home and I run up my mum and hug her.
"Thanks Dean for getting him out of the house." She says.
"I've been out of the house. I went to the corner shop for you ten times a day last week." I say and she laughs.
"Not the same." She says. Dean stays for dinner and when he leaves I go to my room. Before he left Dean gave me a small crumpled up piece of paper. I sit on my desk chair as I uncrumble it.
'Call or text this number, I promise you won't regret it! :) 04 **** *** - Dean' I type the number in my phone but don't text it. I lock the screen and throw it on my bed. Unfortunately, I suck at aiming and it hits my wall, bounces on and off the bed and I hear the horrible sound of the shattering screen as it lands on my floor.
"Crap." I hiss and pick up my now broken device. Well, I'm going to be killed. It wasn't badly cracked, but it was enough for my mother to get angry. I would be paying for the screen to be fixed, I can afford it after all.
"Jai!" My mother calls. I run down stairs and find her in the kitchen.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"What was that sound?" She asks.
"Uh, a pencil. Yeah, I was doing my assignment and I was flicking my pencil back and forth, If you know what I mean and it just flew and hit the wall." I say and she looks at me with a 'I know your lying' look on her face.
"It sounded heavier than that." She says.
"It was a big pencil." I say.
"Okay then. Whatever you say." She says and I walk up to my room. She didn't believe me and she would find a way to find what actually hit the wall.
