Me!? Seriously!? Out of all the girls in school he wants me!? He's my best friend. Best friends aren't supposed to catch feelings right...? Well... yeah I guess they do, but what the hell!?

This cannot be happening, this cannot be happening... I repeated those words in my head.

I laid down on the bed, with the phone still close to my ear. I lightly slapped my forehead. I really didn't know what to say.

"You there?" Charlie said.

"Uh... yeah. I'm here." I tried to regain focus.

"Oh god! I'm so stupid.... There's someone else isn't it?" He said.

"No! I mean... well..." I couldn't let him know about Nathan. That would be tragic.

"I'm so sorry... I shouldn't have asked that."

"There's nothing to be sorry about... I'm just..." I paused. "Overwhelmed."

"Overwhelmed?"

"Yeah..." I said, and I heard his mom call his name over the phone.

"I... I gotta go." He sounded very sad. "Goodnight."

"Goodnight..." I said, and he hung up. I let the phone drop next to me on the bed. I let out a sigh, and covered my face with my hands.

I only love him as a friend, but what am I going to do?

Time skip...

It was now Monday morning, and I just presented my science project. I'm happy I got a 100 on it. I put hard work into that thing.

Thoughts about what happened on the phone were still running through my mind.

I haven't seen Charlie yet, but maybe I'll see him in lunch.

"--and don't forget to study! We have midterms coming up!" The teacher said. All the students groaned.

The bell finally rang, and everyone raced to go to lunch. We must be having chicken nuggets or some good shit finally, I thought.

I went to lunch, and got some food. Then I went to my table and saw Charlie already there. I was glad to see him.

"Hey." I said, and he looked up and smiled.

"Hey, what's up?" He said, as I sat in front of him. Our other friends came, and started to fill up the table.

"Nothing much... Got a 100 on my project." I said.

"That's 'nothing much'?" He chuckled.

"Yeah. I pull out 100's from my ass." I said, confidently. "It's a everyday thing." We both laughed. "What's up with you?"

"Just got detention for coming in school late. I really don't wanna deal with Mr. Gardener."

"Want me to bail you out, like you did me?"

"Nah, I'll just serve it. I really have nothing else to do after school..." Charlie said, leaning back in his chair. "And by the way, I'm still sorry for what happened."

"It's ok Charlie..." I said. "I still love you as a friend."

"Yeah..." I could tell he was still affected by it.

"Hey, I'm still going to prom with you." I said, and he smiled.

"You better best friend." He chuckled, and we began to eat.

Time skip...

I was at my locker, getting my things to leave. Oh, how I loved the end of the day. I could hear my bed calling me from a mile away.

I put my backpack over my shoulder, and walked down the hall towards Nathan's office. I haven't seen him since he dropped me off.

I went to open his door, and walked in. I closed the door behind me.

Nathan was at his desk as usual, and writing things down on his notepad.

He looked up at me and smiled.

"Hey." He said, getting up, coming towards me. Nathan gave me a hug.

"Hello, Mr. Gardener. How was your day?" I smiled, and he put his hands on my waist.

"Better, now that you're here." He kissed my forehead. "And the good news is that there was only one issued detention for today. Charlie Bartlett came in late."

Even his name made me think about what happened. I knew I told Charlie everything was ok, but it's not. I have no idea why I was still stuck on it.

I guess Nathan picked up on my sadness.

"What's wrong honey?" He asked, looking into my eyes.

"Nothing..."

"Yes there is. I can tell when you're lying."

I didn't say anything for a moment.

"I... I don't really want to talk about it right now." I said, looking down.

"It's alright." He gently lifted my head up to look at him. "You can tell me anything when you're ready."

I looked into his warm eyes and pulled him close.

"Ok." I wrapped my arms around his neck. He placed his hands back on my waist, and our bodies were close. Our faces moved closer together, and we shared a kiss.

Suddenly, we heard the door open. We pulled away from the kiss a little late, and we both immediately looked towards the door.

There stood a shocked, and wide eyed Charlie Bartlett.

In that moment, I knew... Everything would be fucked up.
