Chapter 39

It's been a month since Mason has not come to the office. Mr Anderson has taken the whole control in his hands again. Still whenever I pass from Mason's room unintentionally only but I always look inside hoping he might be there but he never is.
I was sitting on my seat when Alice arrived.
"You know what?" Alice asked me.
"Nops." I replied even without looking at her.
"Look at me at least, dummy."
I stopped doing my work and looked at her.
"What?"
"We were talking when a thought came to us."
"What thought and who this "we" are?"
"Me and Nicole."
"So what you both were thinking?"
"We think Nate likes you."
"Alice, you are out of your mind? I don't even want to listen it further. Seriously."
"What? Have you ever noticed how he looks at you when you are lost somewhere else?"
"There is no way that he likes me, Alice. Period."
"Why is it so hard to believe?"
I did not say anything nor I wanted to say anything on this topic. I do not want to think about anyone but..
"Elena, say something."
"I just know that he can't like me."
"You are mad. Listen to me.."
"Alice, no. You know who I like. I don't want to hear about anyone else."
"You used to like him."
"That was years ago. I have moved on. If there is any guy on my mind then it's Mason. That's it."
"Stop thinking about him already. Nate is a much better person. He cares for you. The way he watches you, every morning he comes here to say good morning, he always sits with you in the canteen, all this indicates one thing that he is into you."
"Alice, please."
"No. You please. It's been months, Elena. Move on."
I don't think I can make her understand. Even though she has a boyfriend, she still can't understand my feelings. I did not say anything to her and she too stomped away.

What all Alice said was stuck in my mind though. I started paying more attention to Nate's actions and reactions. What Alice said the other day was seeming to be true, him coming to my desk every morning, trying to gain my attention when I am lost, sometimes bringing food for me, he even started messaging me again.
Above all this he also insists on dropping at me home. If truth to be told he was indeed giving me too much attention which is not right. If by any chance what Alice said about Nate's feelings are true then it's not good. He will only get hurt which I don't want.
He used to do some of these before as well when we were freinds, I thought. May be we are just overthinking. I shook my head. I hope we are.

On saturday evening we all went to a party as suggested by none other than Alice. I obviously did not want to go but it wasn't like I had any other option. Mom and Dad weren't at home this weekend and Alice knew about it very clearly.
So here we are at a pub with a loud music. Alice even invited Jake to introduce him to all. Jake got along really well with everyone. Nate and Jake were old friends anyway.
After a few drinks everyone went on the dance floor but few minutes later I came back. Even if I want to I can't help but miss him. It's been so long now.
While I was moving my finger across the glass, someone came and sat beside me.
"Lost again?"
"Huh? No. I'm fine, Nate. Just a little tired."
"Really? Are you sure you are okay? I mean most of the time you remain lost now. Are you hiding something?"
"No, Nate. I am not."
He looked at me then straight into my eyes. I looked away after a few seconds.
"Fine then. Let's dance." He extend his hand towards me.
"Nate." I protested.
"What? C'mon."
I finally gave in and held his hand.
We went to the dance floor. Alice winked at me as soon as she saw us.
Nate put my hands on his shoulders and put his hands around my waist.
"Do you remember that day?" Nate asked me suddenly.
"Which day?" I asked.
"When we danced together."
I remembered that day. We all went to a party and he asked me to dance with him. We danced for hours after that. It was a special day for me as at that time I even had a crush on him.
"Yes. I remember." I smiled at him.
While we were dancing I don't know why I was having a feeling that someone was looking at us. I looked around and someone might call me crazy but I think I saw him. His eyes. I can't forget them.
"Excuse me." I said to Nate and looked around but he was gone. I looked all around. I even went outside but he was not there. I could not find Mason.
'Where are you, Mason?' I thought.
I felt like calling him but did not do it.
"You okay?"
I turned around. "Yeah. Just wanted some fresh air."
Nate nodded. "Let's go inside."
"I am tired. I want to go home. Please tell Alice that I left."
I was leaving but he held my hand.
"Wait. How will you go home?"
Just like before we were so close. Our noses almost touching.
I took a step away.
"I will take a cab."
"At this time?"
"Yeah."
"No way. I will drop you."
"Nate you don't have to worry. I can go by myself."
"No. I said I'll drop you."
"Fine. I will message Alice. Let's go."
We went to his car and he started driving. No one said anything.
It wasn't a long ride to my place. Given there wasn't much traffic, we reached home pretty early.
He stopped the car outside my house.
"Thanks, Nate. Goodnight."
"That means you are not going to invite me inside." He said with a pout.
I laughed. He looked so cute doing that.
"What? I did not think that you wanted to come inside."
"Well."
"Do you want to come inside?"
"Do you want me to?"
"Umm. Nate..."
"Chill. I was kidding."
I looked away.
"Elena, I lik.."
"Nate, please.."
He closed his eyes.
"I know you don't like me that way, Elena but that does not mean that I can't even try."
I did not say anything for I don't know what to say to him.
He held my hand and kissed it.
"You looked beautiful tonight. Goodnight."
"Bye, Nate."
I opened the door and went inside without looking at him again. There was this weird feeling inside me which I can't comprehend.
I went upstairs, changed my clothes and sat down on my bed.
Was I hallucinating? Was it just my imagination? It can't be. It was Mason only. I know but he was gone too fast.
Damn. I don't know what is happening. Whatever, life.
I played some soft music to stop myself from thinking about him and drifted off to sleep.
That night again I dreamt of Mason Anderson. I went towards him. To meet him but when I reached near him it wasn't Mason but Nate.
