Posting the application that Sandy helped Meera in typing her resume, they both went on a jolly ride in the metro. This was Meera's first metro ride that amused her a lot. Sandy gave Meera a glimpse of Delhi's life. She showed her some important locations, the bus route numbers, train routes, etcetera.
A week passed by while Meera kept waiting for the call letter for interview. Meera skipped lunch daily, which she was very much accustomed to, so that she would save money. Sandy was busy with her office work whole day leaving Meera alone. It was another week beginning, Meera was lying on her bed covering herself with a duvet trying to protect herself from the cold, when Sandy arrived back from office that evening.
'Meera get up, I have something to show you' said Sandy with much excitement.
Hearing Sandy's voice Meera woke up, she looked all messed up with the stains of tears across her face clearly telling that she had been crying.
'Have you been crying?' enquired Sandy and before Meera could say something she continued, 'See this letter, it was in the letter box. I thought you would check but it seems you've been busy spending the time in wasting your tears'
'No Didi, I was just sleeping' Meera tried to hide her feelings.
'Yeah I know....now come on open the letter and read it, it's for you' said Sandy handing over the white envelope to Meera. Cutting it open, Meera read the contents, 'Didi they have asked me to attend the interview the day after tomorrow' Meera smiled again.
'That's such a good news, isn't it? Now come on cheer up' Sandy said pinching Meera's cheeks and tried to change her mood. Reading the letter, Meera was too excited, she felt like the time was passing pretty slowly as she kept waiting for the day to come, oh god I just can't wait to attend my first interview.... she kept thinking.
On the day of the interview, Meera wore a dress that she felt was good enough--it was a gift from her dear friend Tulsi. Wearing it, she felt like a princess--not wasting a minute, she picked up all the documents and was ready to leave by seven in the morning. my interview is at nine....I need to go now or else i will be late.....
'Didi I am going for the interview' she informed Sandy who was in the bathroom not giving time for Sandy to come out, prepare her a bit and wish her luck.
Meera first took a bus to reach the metro station and from there she traveled in a metro train to reach Gurgoan, the commercial hub for many Multi-National Companies. Walking on the road searching for the office building, she noticed the black clouds forming in the sky. Ignoring them she enquired a couple of ladies passing by and found the exact location. Entering the building pushing the glass door, she saw few girls holding files and were enquiring at the reception. Meera too followed them, 'Excuse me ma'am I am here for the interview' she said showing the short receptionist who wore a blue skirt, white blouse and her hair was tied into a bun and she was wearing heavy make-up.
'It's on the second floor' replied the receptionist without even looking at the letter. Searching for the stairs Meera reached second floor. There was another counter with another receptionist who too was wearing the same dress as the one on the ground floor. oh no!! do i have to wear this same dress if i get selected.. she wondered and enquired the receptionist about the interview.
'Wait over there in the lounge. you will be called when your turn comes' she replied.
Meera occupied the empty sofa with few more girls in there at that time. Slowly within few minutes whole of that lounge area was filled with young girls like her. Meera heard few of them whispering about her outfit. She noticed all the other girls wore western outfits, jeans and blazers and Meera was the one wearing totally different dress, she was the odd one out.
'What's with her attire? She's got no style!' said one of the girls
'Yup! What's with that shawl? Granny!'said another teasing Meera.
Ignoring their whispers, Meera sat there waiting for her turn praying to God to help her get this job. One by one the girls sitting there were called in and three hours later Meera was called.Opening the door she said, 'Good afternoon sir' and stood in front of the table where two people were seated on the other side of that wooden table. One male and the other female, both appeared to be in their mid forties and their facial expressions were crystal clear indicating that they were both agitated.
'Show me your certificates' said the lady.
Meera instantly gave her the file where her tenth pass and twelfth pass certificates were kept. Looking at them the lady yelled, 'What do you think of yourself? Do you think that just passing twelfth grade will earn you this job?! Just get out of here'
The loud voice of the lady frightened Meera terribly. Picking up her file back, she walked out while other girls present there that afternoon giggled looking at her. Meera understood that this job was not meant for someone like her. Silently she walked out of that building with a heavy heart and tears forming in her eyes making her vision blur. By then the weather outside turned much more cloudy--it started to drizzle while the roads were getting deserted. Her thoughts of the failed interview did not allow her to notice the dark clouds and the cold water droplets falling from the sky did not make her aware of the surroundings.
'Hey girl, come with us. We'll give you some warmth!!' Meera heard a male voice very close to her and the loud honk of the car frightened her. Turning around she saw a car following her with two of it's occupants trying to touch her. 'Baby get inside, why do you wanna get wet in the rain...I'll make you all wet' said another one.
oh god no i can't die now....help me god....
She kept praying and ran to save herself from those men. They followed her and tried touching her making her change her course. She kept running here and there losing the direction and suddenly made a sharp left turn. Unaware of what's coming ahead as she turned, she went straight and bumped into another car coming from the opposite direction making her fall on the ground instantly. With the intensity of rain increasing she was getting drenched making her shiver due to the cold water falling from the sky and was also experiencing the fear of losing her life.
Holding her chest she gasped for breath when she heard a male voice 'Are you okay Miss or are you hurt?' Meera could not say a word. All she could see was two legs standing in front of her.
'Hey come on bro....leave the girl to us' said one of the occupants of the car that was following Meera.
'Oh yeah!! If you guys don't leave now, you all will be dead' said the man standing in front of Meera holding a pistol. Seeing the pistol, those following Meera sped away. 'Are you okay Miss?' he asked her again. Meera was in no position to answer, she collapsed in his arms.
