SebastianThe next week I ran into Augustus again. He asked me if he could meet Luna because he's been wanting to see her, and Luna was all for it.
I was walking with him to her room and he was saying how excited he was to meet her even though he doesn't even know her. I watched as he ran his fingers through his curly blonde hair nervously. It made me chuckle to myself.
He knocked and opened the door a crack. "Luna?"
"Come in," her sweet voice said.
Gus and I walked in holding two bags of food from McDonald's. We decided we would all take the food and eat lunch at one of the tables by the big windows. It always felt more liberating and un-concealing and bright than her hospital room. She requested to get a different one with a better view, which was still in effect.
"Hi." I kissed her quickly on the lips and she sniffed me.
"You smell like chocolate mint," she smirked.
"Is that bad?" I questioned, pulling up my shirt to smell it.
"No, I like it."
"Uh, I'm Augustus," he said, sticking his hand out, "but lots of people call me Gus."
"Hi, I'm Luna."
"Well, are you ready?" I asked.
"Yeah. I haven't been out of this room in forever."
We all walked down the halls towards the large seating area. I grabbed us a table by the window and helped Luna sit down, whispering in her ear, "You look gorgeous today."
She blushed, her cheeks turning a rosy pink. "Thank you."
She looked tired today. Her eyes were darker underneath, her skin looked fatigued if that even makes sense. She just seemed slow and worn.
I sat and let Gus and her talk as I watched Luna slowly become sicker and she couldn't even control it. She just had to watch herself get sicker too. That was the only thought that consumed me anymore.
"So, what kind of stuff did you guys do?" Gus asked, taking a bite out of his burger.
I glanced at Luna and she smiled tenderly, looking down into her lap.
"Well, we got to see the ocean and slept under the stars. We stood on the edge of a cliff once or twice, that was really fun. We went paddle boarding and skating and just, a whole bunch of stuff," she said, her eyes glowing. That's one thing I loved about her. Her eyes never grew tired.
"How did you pay?" He questioned.
"Well, I had some money saved up, and we basically only paid for gas and sometimes a hotel and a meal. So it lasted us a bit," I explained.
"Sleeping in the back of his suburban was better than a hotel room," Luna said.
"Maybe I should take my girlfriend on a trip," he suggested, looking into the distance.
"It depends how much she likes to travel. Luckily in my case, my girlfriend loves travelling just as much as I do. If not, more," I laughed.
I looked over at Luna and I felt myself begin to panic. She was laying back in her chair with her eyes closed. I stood up hastily and nudged her shoulder.
"Luna?" I shook her gingerly. I was seriously trying not to freak out.
"What's wrong?" Gus asked very distressedly.
"I have no idea, but it can't be good. Stay here I'm gonna get a doctor."
Gus sat beside her and kept trying to wake her while I ran around like a chicken trying to look for a doctor.
"Someone, please help me!" I yelled. A few patients stared at me but I kept frantically looking for someone to help.
"What's wrong?" A doctor asked, taking me by the arm. I led him towards Luna, not really able to get any words out.
"My girl- I mean Luna Matthews. She was fine just a second ago and all of a sudden I looked and she was like this."
"I've heard about her condition but she's going to need a doctor that knows more details about her case. I'll call him into her room."

Gus and I sat in her room in the muted silence waiting for her to wake up. The doctor said that what happening wasn't super dangerous, so there was no need to worry. Her parents were on their way even though it was like ten at night.
"I can't imagine how you're getting through this," Gus whispered, "if I had to live through this, watching my girlfriend, I think I would go insane. You're really strong."
You're really strong.
"Luna is really strong," I corrected him.
"I just want you to know that, if you ever need me I'm here. Like I like you, and I like Luna. I think we will be really good friends."
I smiled and looked at him. "You know, that means a lot because I don't actually have any friends really, besides Luna."
"I can't believe that. Who wouldn't want to be friends with you?" He asked.
"You'd be surprised." I chuckled dryly.
"Well from now on, we're friends."
