Soothing

When I hear that sweet lullaby,
The shadow man is by my bedside.
He reaches his hand out to me
And I take it, us dancing softly.
The room changes into something grand;
A ballroom with people and a band
And the people are dancing alongside us.
He tells me I don't have to make such a fuss.
"You know you could always live with me.
I'll never shout, or do unfair things.
I'll be sure to listen, every day
And remember every important detail that you say.
All I ask for you to do
Is to just let me in, and I'll take care of you."
I know his tricks. I know his lies.
I know how he stalks me for days and nights.
As bad as things in my house get
I could never go with him, so I tell him "not yet."
"Time's running out," he whispers in my ear
While holding me closely and oh so dear
"Are you sure you'll live to see the day?
I will love you." But I shake my head and stay
"I can't just abandon everyone here."
"But they despise you. It's them that you fear
While I am the opposite. I can keep you safe."
We're back at my bedroom when I tell him to wait.
I avert my eyes and say "I just don't know."
Everything stops having that nice, warm glow.
He then looks at me, and sighs.
"My offer still stands. Until next time."
He kisses the top of my tired head
And off I go, back into bed.
But when I hear that sweet lullaby
He's back again, by my bedside.
