I kind of wanted to slap him
My brother is slumped against my couch on his phone when I wake up in the morning. He sees me, smiles pitifully, and motions to my night table. "Brought you a tea," he mumbles.
I rub my eyes. He's obviously worried about me. "Thanks, Willy Wonka," I chuckle, throwing my legs over the side.
"No problem," he smiles. "Hey, what are you doing today?"
"Sulking," I grumble, reaching for my tea. It's lukewarm, but I'm thirsty, so I chug half the mug.
Will sighs and stands up. "Come on, get out of bed kid," he begs, "I need your help with something."
I raise my brows. "With what?"
He scratches the back of his neck and glances away shyly. "I'm going to ask Sam to prom," he admits, giggling nervously afterwards. "I don't know what to do."
I chuckle and clap my hands excitedly. "Knowing Sam," I say, jumping out of bed, "she's not going to want something huge." I feel like I have purpose to my day now, and rush into my closet to find clothes other than my over worn band tee and sweats. "Don't do it like," I peek my head around the door, "in front of people. She'll like it if it's just you and her."
"I want to do that too," Will sits on the arm of my couch, "but like everyone expects the football guys to do something huge for their girlfriends promposal." He laughs, "last year, Josh did an entire number with the cheerleaders before a game in the mascot costume and the other players came out with a sign that said something like, 'YOU'RE A FAIR CATCH. TACKLE PROM WITH ME, COURT?'"
I come out of my closet in jean shorts and a tank top. "Awe, I didn't know that!" I laugh, "I keep forgetting he's in fifth year. I wonder if Court's gonna ask him this year?"
Will shrugs. "I just think, if I don't put in much effort, is Sam going to be disappointed?"
I ruffle Will's shaggy blond hair. "No, Will," I grab my mug of tea, "because as much as it doesn't look like it, Court is super into football and she loves going to Josh's games. That makes sense for them. If you do something personal for Sam, something that makes her remember everything awesome you two have done together, which kind of isn't a lot of things because you haven't been together for that long, then she'll be really happy."
Will nods, thinking about it.
"I mean if you just went up to her and asked 'go to prom with me?', she'd—"
"Hey!" Will jumps up, scowling when I try to imitate his voice, "I don't sound like a fucking dopehead."
I slap the back of his neck and laugh, "oh, okay, whatever, dude."
Will tugs on my hair and laughs, "so you think she'll be happy no matter what?"
"Of course," I smile. "Let's go out for breakfast and we'll talk about it."
