Tanner probably won't like it
Mom and dad are surprised when I walk in the door with a sleeping child in my arms, almost toppling over myself. Mom's face is filled with adoration and concern, while dad looks away, hoping that when he turns back around, the toddler is no longer there.
"She's Axel's sister," I explain, kicking off my shoes.
Dad sighs in relief. "I thought you kidnapped her."
I shake my head in disappointment. "Dad!"
He laughs and approaches us with mom, and takes the little girl into his arms. "What's she doing here?" He asks, his burly arms around the sleeping kid, rocking her like he rocked Will and I when we were babies. "Where's Axel?"
"Working," I sigh, setting the back pack against the wall. "I guess he was watching his sister. I don't know what's going on, guys. I just couldn't leave her there for another hour so I offered to bring her home until Will and him are finished. Is that okay? She can sleep in my bed."
Mom and Dad nod. "Yes, of course," mom ensures. "Let's get her to bed."
My parents take little Jemmy up to my bed, and I sit down in relief, my arms aching, at the counter in the kitchen, waiting for them to come back down to watch their TV show. Five minutes pass and both parents meet me, climbing into the chairs across from me.
Mom shakes her head. "That little girl shouldn't have been at the garage so late," she sighs, "why didn't Will text me? I would have offered to watch her." I shrug and mom runs her fingers through her hair and looks at my dad. "Axel is still in high school and he's working and watching his sister, Martin," she frowns, and her eyes flicker back to me. "Is he coming over tonight?"
I nod. "He said he'd pick her up."
"We'll have to talk to him," mom stipulates, "find out what's going on."
"Now, Julia," Dad interjects, "let them both sleep here tonight and we'll talk about it after they've both been fed over breakfast tomorrow morning."
Mom nods. "That's a good idea, love, thank you." She stands up at takes my hands into hers. "You did the right thing, hunny, I'm proud of you. Are you staying up or going to sleep?"
I shrug. "I'm not tired anymore, so I'll stay up."
She smiles, "okay then, your dad and I are going to rest and we'll deal with this in the morning. Text your brother to tell Axel his sister and him are welcome to stay the night."
I nod as my parents get up to leave, both pecking my forehead. "Love you," they mumble.
"You too," I whisper, and soon I saunter out of the kitchen as well and find myself crawling onto the couch in the living room, cuddling into the cushions and dozing off into a slumber.
