Daddy and Jem are pulling into the driveway on their bikes as I walk up the sidewalk. I wave at them, and Jemmy quickly throws her bike with training wheels onto the grass and runs towards me.
I giggle, and pick her up into my arms, pecking her chubby cheeks.
"How are you, Jemmy?"
"I'm good," she says, wrapping her arms around my neck.
"Have a good day, princess?" Dad asks me.
"Yeah," I tell him when we walk inside, "exam prep is killing me though."
"I remember those days," he laughs, helping me take off my heavy backpack with tired Jemmy still curled up in my arms. "Don't you have to think about prom too now?"
I snort a laugh. "I'm not going to prom, Daddy."
He gasps. "Really? Does your mother know?"
I shrug. "It's not my thing. Plus, who'd I go with?"
"Your friends!" Dad ruffles my hair. I know he's thinking about Axel, and how if he and mom hadn't gotten involved, maybe Axel would have taken me. He would have promposed to me like Dad did to Mom in their senior year, and mom would get to go dress shopping with me, which is practically her dream because I never wear fancy dresses.
What Dad doesn't know though is that I ended up getting together with Axel and there is no way he's going to go to prom. He was clear about that. All he needs to do now is be clear with my parents - he loves me, and we're dating.
