"Man, I'm tired," I sigh as I punch out from work.
Tanner squeezes my shoulders. "You did well tonight," he assures, pulling on his varsity jacket.
I laugh. "Delivering pizza!" I exclaim, grabbing my purse from my locker. "Something I'm actually good at! How wonderful. Maybe delivering pizza really is my calling!"
"Surrounded by pizza all day," Tanner punches out too, "doesn't sound so bad."
I chuckle, walking out of the lunch room with him to finally go home. We say goodnight to Joanne, the lovely manager who thankfully let me deliver pizza with Tanner again. He mostly listened to country as we drove, or talked about football, but nevertheless, he was enjoyable enough to be around. Maybe I enjoyed him and his company a little more than just a fellow employee.
"Do you live close by?" Tanner asks me as we step out into the dark night.
I nod. "It's a ten minute walk maybe," I mumble, "and it's nice outside so I don't mind."
Tanner nods. "I live just a block away," he tells me, pointing down the sidewalk. "I'm not exactly in the mood to go home just yet. Do you mind if I walk you home? You know, incase there's any weirdos or something."
I shrug. "If you want, that would be nice. But I'll have you know I can fight off weirdos well enough by myself."
He nods. "Good to know. You can protect me then."
I laugh, "will do," and we walk down the sidewalk side by side.
I'm not exactly sure what to say. I'm out of questions to ask him about football, and I don't know about anything else he likes. Luckily, Tanner speaks up finally. "So what is your dream?" He asks me. "You know, if the whole pizza deliverer thing doesn't work out for you."
I shrug my shoulders. "I wish I knew," I tell him. "I'm taking sciences and maths so I can go to university to become a nurse, but I'm not sure I even really want to be a nurse." I glance up at him. He's listening attentively. I sigh, "I want to help people. I thought that meant becoming a nurse. I'm just not very excited about it. I don't know."
"I understand," Tanner mumbles, "but even if you don't end up becoming a nurse, whatever you're doing now will probably be useful to you in the future. You have time too. Don't worry about it too much. Did you apply to universities yet?"
I shake my head. "Thanks Tanner. And no, I'm waiting until the end of the month. What about you?"
"College football," he tells me, "I've applied for a scholarship at Florida State and a few other places, but my dream is to play football there."
"Awesome!" I nudge him. "So all the football talk isn't for nothing, huh?"
He chuckles. "I talk about football when I get nervous."
