Mom promised she'd help me pick out an outfit for my date tonight

Mom promised she'd help me pick out an outfit for my date tonight. I freaked and texted her when I left school after Tanner winked at me in the hall and told me to 'wear something nice tonight'. My day had been chaos free and super calm, no run in with Axel or a ball to the face. And then that happened. I do not own nice clothes. I was planning on wearing a black shirt and my least ripped pair of jeans.

I don't think thats the sort of nice he meant.

But mom isn't home when I get in. The house is completely silent; I think dad went treasure hunting at the Savers downtown. He could spend hours in there, chatting it up with some other shoppers about their thrifting adventures.

I take my things upstairs and change into tiny black shorts and a black camisole, running around the house opening all of the windows to allow the cool air to flow inside. I plop down on the couch and turn on Dr. Phil, watching interestedly, the thought of my undone homework creeping to the back of my mind.

A half an hour later, I hear the front door creak open.

"Make yourself at home," Will's voice seeps into the living room. I frown and slide down the couch, trying to hide. "I just have to go check on the neighbour's dog. I told them I'd watch him for the next couple of days. Just uh, go inside, snoop, whatever." The door slams shut, but opens up quickly again, "—Wait, my sister's home."

"Okay?" I recognize the voice instantly.

"I haven't talked to her about you yet."

Will's friend laughs. "About your secret lover? Oh Will, you're not hiding me forever, are you?"

I can feel the unamused look on Will's face. "Shut up. We haven't talked since you told me you knew each other. I don't want her to feel like I betrayed her, knowing you're the guy who's giving her a hard time and still letting you come over."

He laughs again. "I think we're good now. Maybe even friends. It's not a huge deal."

"She's being dramatic?"

"Totally."

"It's your word against her's, man," Will mutters. "She's my sister. If she doesn't want me to hangout with you, I'm not going to."

Axel sighs. "I'll apologize?"

"Okay," Will says, "but only if you see her. Stay down here in the kitchen 'til I'm back and try to avoid her. I'll figure it out from there."

The door closes again. It's quite silent, until Axel grunts when he probably squats to take off his boots, his back still giving him some pain. I stay still, hoping he'll wander out of the hallway and straight into the kitchen without noticing me.
